MG4 Software Update Thread

Hey all,

So i decided to e-mail MG's CEO as I got sick at how many times I had to manually re-pair my bluetooth to my MG4.

I got a somewhat positive response from MG (pasted below) and hope that I can continue chasing them untill I know that a fix can be installed etc

"Good Morning

Thank you for your recent correspondence. Mr Wang has read your email but is currently unavailable so has asked I respond on his behalf.

We are aware of this slight issue with the bluetooth, our Engineering team are currently in contact with our development team in China to release a software fix for this.

I predict this will be available in the coming weeks so as soon as this is released, an MG approved dealer will be able to rectify this issue for you.

I apologise for the inconvenience this is causing but please rest assured, we are working on it currently.

Regards"

It doesn’t matter which email address you use or to whom you write, the reply will be from the same person. Be aware that site rules don’t allow for posting any MG employees individual email, I posted an email address for head of customer care and was given a warning for posting a “personal email address”

So I asked if they could try and roll out the fix via the over the air method, this was the response that I got.

"Thank you for your further correspondence.

Once the software has been tested and we are certain this will enhance the vehicle’s features, we will release this to our dealer network and they will be able to install this for you. It may be best to keep in contact with your local MG dealer with regards to time frames.
In terms of SOTA (Software Over The Air), this is a function that will eventually be available for MG customers, we just need to ensure, again, that this enhances the vehicle instead of causing detriment to the customer experience.
We continually develop our vehicles between our Design/Engineering team in UK and our Development team in Shanghai. As soon as new software/developments are available, we will release these.
I appreciate your frustration; I also drive an MG 4 Trophy and have experienced the same issue. Please rest assured the team are working tirelessly to rectify this concern.
Regards"

I've been ruminating on the use of software in cars, especially as a result of comments on this site. I've owned cars for over 50 years and during that time the 'hardware' has become much more reliable. I think the MG4 has 7 years warranty. However, the use of computers is changing the expertise required by garages. They have less need for spanner wielding technicians and more need for software engineers. Judging by the comments on this forum, some haven't quite realised this.

I completely agree! Most of the garages, even large ones, have mechanics, perhaps good at adjusting a carburettor by ear, when the maximum of electronics was an OBD diagnosis! Today there is a lot of electronics and little mechanics. So either they equip themselves with mechanotronics or they place IT alongside the mechanics!

Long time ago since garages had a mecanic that could tune a carburator by ear, that's only in specialist garages now. Most mecanics today are obd2 savy and have experience with most car brands, that was up to the Chinese cars came. Tell me what mecanics are acquinted with Chinese car brands? Most of them are now learning the quirks as we see and at our cost/time. It will get better after some time if the Chinese car brands learn how to educate mecanics in Europe. The problem is realy that the rate of development is extremely fast.

All IT sectors are constantly evolving! If one is a good computer scientist, a refresher course and a little practice is enough to master the new system. I speak of it with full knowledge of the facts

But how many car manufacturers and garages are employing 'good computer scientists'? The Software faults we are seeing would imply lack of testing.

It certainly does look like a senior citizens' version of the heater controls.

(The buttons are too small though).

This is how it should have been designed in the first place - big buttons that are easy to aim for and press. It's still not discoverable that there is swipe down though and that should made more visually obvious.

Of course the infotainment system and software is replete with little nuisance usability issues and it's death by a thousand cuts. Buttons that should be bigger, default settings that should be remembered, difficulty reaching some options, discoverability in the UI, a radio that takes forever to remember its stations, charging / discharging that doesn't show useful info and so on.

Two questions:

1. What's the current latest version for Trophy owners? I believe it is R33 although I have heard rumors of an R36. Does anyone have a version above R33?

2. Any new Trophy recalls out there that people are aware of? I've not been contacted by MG about any recalls but again I am hearing people talk about some new ones, perhaps these are not recalls but updates to apply at next service?

Thanks!
Had software updates on my Tango Trophy yesterday, Infotainment now on R33 from R30.
LKA, now on permanently and i have to manually switch it off. Although i am tempted to see if it has improved. 🤷‍♂️
