MG4 Software Update Thread

Reports of SE R40 and Trophy R67 on Facebook groups with a claim that they can't be updated by USB.
Well, the Trophy R63 was only partially updated by USB, which meant the important SIPS config was missed in many cases. Perhaps MG have mandated that all updates now need to be via SIPS so as to avoid such issues?
Hi,
My MG4 SE SR Dec 22 still has R13 software.
Going in for service in 10 days. What should I ask they update the software to?
My Nov '22 SE SR is on 1100R38 ... together with an HVAC module software update it means my HVAC system now works correctly - the target temperature is cabin temperature so no longer any need to add an offset (i.e. I can now set 21C rather than 25C) and the climate control is way better.

Did you have to pay to get the R38 update? (HVAC = ? (so I don't look a complete **** talking to the garage)

No. In fact I didn't even ask ... they just did it at my car's 2nd service last November. (I was previously on 1100R33). However I do have a good working relationship with my dealer (Arnold Clark East Kilbride), and they know I'm not a fool - rather I'm clued up as regards what's available for the MG4 (mostly through this forum :)), so they don't try to hoodwink me. First time they tried anything like that they got short shrift and quickly realised the error of their ways. 😎

Hi, R40 actually CAN be updated by USB, that's how I upgraded my car. Both MPU and MCU can be upgraded... The files are here on my OneDrive if you want. Unfortunately, I have not been able to grab R67 yet, but that doesn't mean it's not upgradeable through USB (at least for the MPU).

Any significant benefit if moving from R33 to R40? TBH I'm happy with R33 so will probably stay with it.

Is the R40 version the one for the newer SE models? Did you get a chance to install it and try it out yet?

R38 is indeed an improvement over R33 it’s not a massive upgrade, but it brings a few noticeable changes and a more fluid UI. (Sorry, I don’t have the changelog in my mind anymore.)

R40 includes all the enhancements introduced in R38, and additionally offers Turkish language support, fixed Bluetooth pairing issues, and very minor cosmetic fixes.

So if you want to upgrade your car, you should consider R40 rather than R38. Especially since it fixes Bluetooth pairing problems…

The reason dealerships try to put us off asking for software updates is that they have to block out half a day in the mechanic's schedule in case the update fails and they have to start over.

If your car is there for half a day anyway (as mine was for SC077) it doesn't hurt to ask for infotainment updates.

Yes, and we still come across cars with issues that were addressed years ago, things like the exterior temperature display not working, or the star buttons randomly losing their selected functions.

Infotainment updates are just the tree hiding the forest. There are many ECU updates that significantly improve the user experience when applied. But aside from enthusiasts who update their vehicles themselves, virtually no one ever have the chance to drive a fully up-to-date car if they rely on the dealers to perform updates.

No it’s for MY2022/MY2023 cars.

Yes, I’ve been using R40 for about two weeks now…
Do you remember exactly how to roll back from the R63 Luxury/Trophy version to the R40 SE one? Getting into Engineering Mode with the PIN and doing the USB update is a bit different, unfortunately.

For example you listen to Spotify with Android auto.
When for example battery is low our MG fembot lowers volume and helds a speech about that you have to charge battery soon. After this message the audio from Android auto is low. Or you use Satnav (why?) and Mrs gives you direction the audio from Android Auto stays at lower volume. You press play & Pause and it will be normal volume again. But this is something that should not be hard to fix.
@Mouss
Yeah knew about that, but it is still so silly.😋
Australia, 2024 ZSEV. I don't have a problem with the volume as such. But when phone is connected via BlueTooth (not Android Auto), the system won't let me listen to the radio or music via USB. Full Stop. It insists on sound over bluetooth or nothing. So I can't listen to the radio and have my phone primed to receive phone calls. This is pathetic.
Is there an accessable list of software updates that can be referenced? I am not sure what release I am on at the moment, but I suppose they are region/country specific.

Yes, you need to put the update.zip file into a folder named AVN_MPU…
