In sorry I was wrong about your version number so before I answer can you please say what you want out of recognising speed signs. Note that my 2023 MG4 Trophy is not very good at this, often detecting 20mph signs from side roads as you drive on the main 30mph. There is a setting in MG Pilot that allows you to switch this on and off.
Hi, all I want is for the car to recognise and the road speed limit. I had this on previous ICE cars and it worked quite well.

It's really poorly implemented on the mg4, I have access to and drive regularly 3 different EVs and the wife's MG4 is the only one with issues on any of the safety systems

@MikeG, you can switch on/off the speed sign detection, although the default seems to be on for some people. If you select speed limit control via MG Pilot then you have a choice of Manual or Intelligent. With Manual you control the speed setting using the lefthand steering wheel centre button and the on/off via the lefthand button that looks like a steering wheel. With Intelligent control the car 'says' it uses the speed sign recognition system which, as I have pointed out, is not good. See page 12 of the Trophy Guide.

I have not tried intelligent speed control.

Hi, OK some success two weeks into new car. Did an overnight ride from Chichester to Bournemouth via IKEA. Journey used about 25% power and from Southampton to Bournemouth speed recognition working. Worked perfectly on the way back.
I now switch on and set the car on Pilot/intelligent, then turn off speed warnings and off I go. Let’s hope the speed sign recognition continues to work.
Now off to read the electronic manuals….

Yep. Speed limit recognition is pretty bad on the MG4. I turn it off every time I get in the car and keep Waze running. Waze gets it right 99% of the time- the exact opposite of the MG4's performance. It's a great little car let down by pretty awful software.

Agree and I'd add in aftersales after the wife's experiences

I got a Trophy ER a couple of months ago, registered in late August (and yes, this is my first post too!).

The speed sign recognition is definitely buggy. And note that I say “buggy” … not simply “unreliable”. My experience is that on certain trips — invariably my first drive of the day -- detection will fail completely. 100% miss-rate. Never shift away from the 30mph limit for the entire trip, UNTIL the car is parked and left for a while. If I get back in — drive down exactly the same roads — it will then work perfectly. (Or, near perfectly; it occasionally does that thing of picking up a speed limit off a side road or similar … but that’s certainly not an MG-unique thing). Next day … it’ll be stuck on 30mph again for the first trip of the day.

I’ve seen reports of other drivers with recently-delivered MG4s saying the same thing. And even a suggestion that it’s got something to do your first manoeuvre of the day being a reverse out of a parking place. There might be something to that; I usually park nose-first in front of my garage, but one night I left my car parked the other way around and I did notice that the speed recognition worked properly the next morning. But, to be honest, I’ve never been organised/mindful enough to investigate this theory any further. It might just be a co-incidence!

Fortunately my car didn’t arrive with the speed limiter turned on, so the main annoyance caused by this bug is the encap-enforced warning chimes whenever I exceed 30mph. I now instinctively turn those off every time I get in the car.

All the same… it’s very annoying, and seems like a shocker of a quality assurance fail. Hopefully the cause will be identified/patched before too long.
Interesting you need to turn the chime option off every time. Here in Australia, I turned that option off once and never needed to do it again.. re speed sign recognition, I have never figured out if it was using actual camera or GPS info or a combo of both. I turn it off (yes each time i drive) to avoid the displayed speed sign flashing when going over what it thinks is the limit. I am thinking of putting a sticker over that area of the display 😉. Doesn't bother me as I wouldn't trust any car to determine the speed limit on any given road and use my eyes. If I get pulled over for speeding I am pretty sure telling Mr plod that my car got it wrong won't do me any favours 😀 so it's on me to get it right..

My car is 2023 build and the speed recognition is terrible. It doesn't beep at me thankfully.
My 2021 Fiat worked perfectly on that end, it could even read temporary limits off overhead gantry's but not a hope in my MG.

Hi Derek, your findings mirror mine. This feature has been on cars for years and my last car, Vauxhall Mokka, it worked near perfect. I find it starts badly then improves and yes having powered up the laptop ( that’s what I feel the MG4 is) I have a routine of switching off warnings, cruise control etc …. then off I go. It’s a dream to drive after the Mokka because it’s automatic and does it accelerate! Let’s hope the speed recognition software is improved in the near future…MG if you are reading this employ someone from the car IT dept in US or EU motors.

Had a cold night and my MG didn't properly defrost the bit where the front camera is. It complained like crazy for a few seconds, driving me round the bend with bongs and beeps, then it disabled everything and turned into a car that was very nice to drive - no computer controlled interference ;)
