Regarding this, is there a requirement to inform your insurer etc. as an alteration made to the vehicle?

I'd definitely be interested in up-rating the battery modules if that became an option, once my battery life dips under a certain level

Best to let them know, you don't want to find out you're not insured when you need it later.

Unless you absolutely need the ‘extra’ range, I don’t think you need to worry about the current battery dipping under a ‘certain’ level.

Chances are the battery will outlive the rest of the car..
