MG5 Spare wheel kit

My dealer gave me the wrong spare wheel kit. They gave me the one for a MG GS/MG ZS EV. In resolving the issue I've learnt a few things.

The space saver wheel is the same between the models (MG aftersales confirmed this) but it's the tool kit, polystyrene insert and the retention bolt that differs.

If anyone's interested. You could probably buy a 3rd party space saver wheel at a fraction of the cost from eBay and then fix it down with the help of a compatible retention bolt Ali-Express.

I found a retention bolt that looks exactly the same as my original one (except for the colour):

I haven't tested any of it but it's food for thought.

MG5 has a different wheel fittings. 5x100.Their wheel is a bit cheaper than the ZS EV/GS /HS variant. Which is 5x112.
As for the retention bolt,I don't know, but it's probably different size to to avoid mistakes by the dealers.

I have been corrected below.. so am doubtful now. But the kit looks different between the two as per image (mg dealer).
many sites have quoted it as 5x100
I don't have the mg5 to confirm the true fitments.

When I contacted MG about my wheel kit problem they said the following:

With regards to your enquiry, we have confirmed with our parts & accessory department that the MG GS wheel kit is not compatible with the MG5 EV model.

The tool kit that is provided does not fit in the boot, however, the wheel is the same. Also, the retention bolt is not included in the MG GS kit but is included in the MG5 EV kit.

The space saver wheel from the ICE ZS is not compatible with the stud spacings on the ZS EV.
The ZS EV has the wheel stronger hubs used on the heavy HS because of the increased weight of the battery on the ZS EV.
I have just looked at the price of the ZS EV space saver kit on the MG web site.
Wow ...... They have REALLY increased in price of this kit now by over a £100 !.
I bought a space saver kit for my ZS EV from my local agents in about Jan - Feb last year ( 2020 ).
It was £139.00 if my memory serve me correctly, now the same kit is £249.00 - WHY ????.

Yes the MG5 has the same wheel as the GS, HS and ZS EV. It's just the toolkit and bolt that's different.

Will post an update when the wheel arrives and I find out for sure that it doesn't fit.

Probably serves me right for not buying the official MG wheel kit, but I didn't like the £249 price tag one little bit.

I didn't attempt to fit my "MG HS GS & EV" spare wheel but I did line it up and the holes lined up exactly.

May be worth giving the wheel a proper fit on to the hub... with a quoted PCD of 5x100mm for the 5 and 5x112mm for the ZS you are only talking 12mm (1.2cm) difference across the diameter (6mm on the radius) of the stud pattern - possibly easy to 'mis-see' when holding one wheel up in front of the other.... if they were the same bolt pattern I'd have guessed that the part numbers for the ZS and 5 EV's 'official' spare wheels would have been the same.... happy to be proven wrong though.

I’ve spent a productive afternoon.

The MG5 stud spacing is 5x112. All the sites that say it’s 5x100 are wrong.

As I said upthread, I didn’t fancy paying £249 for the official kit so after consulting those wrong sites I first bought a 5x100 wheel - no good.

Today I successfully fitted a 5x112 space saver wheel from a mk5 Golf, went for a short drive (felt ok, car didn’t show any errors) then changed it back.

For the benefit of anyone thinking of doing the same thing, I took a few photos.

Here’s the boot floor before starting:

The floor itself is incredibly flimsy. Thin cloth glued to a bit of corrugated plastic. Ripe for an aftermarket replacement with something more rigid.

Here’s what you get as standard. You can see the foam insert that fills the wheel well to its full depth (5” / 12.5cm). It contains the can of tyre gunk, a 12v compressor, towing eye, and tweezers to remove the wheel nut covers. No jack or wheel brace.

The retaining bolt is an M8:

It didn’t appear to interfere with anything when on the car:

I only went for a short drive (like a few hundred metres) before putting the proper wheel back on. Felt fine, no handling problems, noises or vibrations. Braking also seemed totally fine.

Well done. You've put my mind at rest. Looks like MG were correct. Its the same spare wheel as the MG ZS EV, MG GS and MG HS.

In my first post I put a link to Aliexpress for the wheel retention bolt, for anyone who needs it.

I’d expect everyone would get one with the car. It’s what holds the foam insert that contains the wheel gunk, pump and towing eye. Failing that I’d think any M8 bolt with a wide washer would do.

I didn't but that could have just been my dodgy dealer who gave me the wrong toolkit.
