The knowledge base on this forum is so useful. Knowing very little about electric cars, I have gained so much. But it also reminds me that I still have lots to learn and absorb!
No L2 or L3 pinsPresumably some MGS5 owners can just have a look at the connector on their cars to see if pins L2 and L3 are present? Obviously, pins being present won't guarantee that the car supports 3 phase charging, but if the pins are not there at all then it definitely won't be charging above 7kW single phase.
Hmm - that's odd that @RhythMick's S5 has them then - maybe different models support 3-phase like the Gen 2 vs. ER version of the MG4No L2 or L3 pins![]()
I think he was just showing where the pins should be located. On that photo they are missing.Hmm - that's odd that @RhythMick's S5 has them then - maybe different models support 3-phase like the Gen 2 vs. ER version of the MG4
edited to add - is yours an MGS5 or an MG5? Your profile says MG5?
Can't see were he says he has the pins, have I missed something?Hmm - that's odd that @RhythMick's S5 has them then - maybe different models support 3-phase like the Gen 2 vs. ER version of the MG4

Hmmm... on re-reading the whole thread, you're right, the OP didn't explicitly say that. But I did refer to needing L2 and L3 connections in post #2 and in post #6 the OP referred the checking L2 and L3 on his existing cable, so I'd be gobsmacked if he's gone and bought a 3-phase cable without checking that the car itself has the L2 and L3 pins, as it's been discussed throughout the thread. Can't see were he says he has the pins, have I missed something?

Irelands version same as Trophy in UKThe MGS5 doesn't have an Exclusive variant![]()
You're right and I now feel daft. Not for the first time so hey.I am sure my UK Spec MGS5 Trophy doesn't have the 3 phase pins in the car side of the charger (I may have to double check if people say otherwise)... so it won't matter what cable you have?
My mistake, my S5 is L1 only. I should have checked the car side first.Hmm - that's odd that @RhythMick's S5 has them then - maybe different models support 3-phase like the Gen 2 vs. ER version of the MG4

Thanks , I was expecting a little more resistance , I did say I am originally from Lancashire didn't I. Purely for full disclosure and clarity you understand.Haha yes welcome to stay over and charge up
My S5 trophy definately doesnt have 3 phase charging pins on the car - just single phase - the 2 other phase pins are missing. I think its european models that have the 11kw charger on board.Page 42 of the owners manual (for Type 3 battery packs, 64kWh) indicates that 3-phase charging is supported at 11kW? Am I misreading ?
My Zappi supports 3-phase (I'm lucky to have 3-phase to the house). Do I need to do anything more than switch the Zappi to 3-phase ?
I just have the Type 2 cable which came with the car - do I need a special cable to support 3-phase ?
If its the same as the MG4 then its only 11kw charging if its requested when ordering as an original sale. That order goes through to the factory and if like myself go for the orange / SR/LR then you can add on an extra couple of months delivery time.My S5 trophy definately doesnt have 3 phase charging pins on the car - just single phase - the 2 other phase pins are missing. Eh? EV's with with 3 phase-capable inverters will also work with single phase supplies. Its possible to order one for the UK but would not do your resale values any good as everyone else would have single phase supplies and EVSEs so very much limiting its market and appeal. I wonder what the lease suppliers would have to say?
I was under the impression, yes, but only at 3.6 kw max on one phase. Although I would love to be proven wrong.Eh? EV's with with 3 phase-capable inverters will also work with single phase supplies.
You will love me then....I was under the impression, yes, but only at 3.6 kw max on one phase. Although I would love to be proven wrong.![]()
