The BYD Sealion 7 is probably closest in terms of dimensions (4,830mm long, 2,930mm wheelbase), but the boot space is 520L with seats up / 1,789L with seats folded, and the Frunk is only 58L. The Sealion 7 has an RRP of £47k-59k too, so for a "challenger" brand, it's quite pricey compared to the MG.
Sealion 7 is a challenger for the IM6 and has been used in group tests I've seen.
If we are just going on size and space and not price we could say the S6 is challenger for the im6

I have test driven the Sealion7 extensively since it was a serious contender for me before I placed my for the IM6.
I would not class it as a contender for the IM6.
Plush interior for sure but that's it.
Tech wise same level with my wife's Atto3. 0 levels of automation.
Good performance but nothing to write home about.
Slow charging speeds unless you go for the £59k spec which again is not that fast.
Very, very soft suspension to the point of being annoying when speedbumps are around.

I have not driven the S6 but the IM is another level.

Another top gear review where I lost count of how many times the word Chinese is written.....
I tend not to take anything top gear reviews say as serious unbiased journalism - they have a very poor track record. No such problems with auto express or car wow though !

From what I am reading this change (luxury tax to 50k) will be applied on April 2026 and forward and will not be applied retrospectively.
Therefore if you want to go for the middle and higher spec of the S6 you will have to wait till then.

Don't you start paying that in the second year not first

Right; I may be wrong. I am finding conflicting information on the matter therefore I am going to zip it :)
It will apply to all vehicles registered after 1st April 2025 - that's what I have seen:

"Budget documents state the change to the Expensive Car Supplement to £50,000 is for zero emission vehicles only.

It adds that the change will take effect from April 1, 2026, and will apply zero emission vehicles registered from April 1, 2025."

Thank you for that - that makes common sense as opposed to it only applying from 2026.

Just had a look at the MGS6 whilst getting my 5 serviced today.

My review of it. Well it looks pretty large, appears to be of exceptional build quality with a lovely interior and a nice (none opening) panoramic glass roof. In the flesh, still looks very generic and dull to my taste though.

Hi I to took a look at an S6 today very nice indeed but having read comments here above in this thread about the luxury car VED my understanding of this is after the recent budget if I was to take delivery of this car before 1 April 2026 it would be liable for the luxury tax from its 2nd to fifth year but if I order after 1st April 2026 then it won’t this I confirmed with the sale person.
This is the result of the threshold limit being increased from £40-50000 as of 1st April 26.

So taking delivery of a vehicle priced over £40000 before April 26 you will pay the luxury tax from years 2-5 and that will not be removed.
Les.

My understanding is that's not the case it has been applied for all vehicles bought from 1 April 25

Future Threshold Change: In the Autumn Budget of November 2025, it was announced that the threshold for the Expensive Car Supplement will increase to £50,000 for electric cars only, effective from 1 April 2026. This increase is backdated for EVs registered from 1 April 2025.
