ZS EV
Hi
Had the S5 for around 3 months now after replacing ZS EV. Enjoying the car but the economy is worse than the ZS by a margin. Getting 2.8 km. Mainly short journeys and charged to 100 per cent once since I had the car otherwise charge to 80 per cent. Any ideas on how to improve economy?
Thanks in advance

That's really poor, what is your driving style/environment like? Settings on the car? You've been a ZS driver so you know how the cold works on range.
My own S5 is much better but I don't generally do motorway speeds so..

Had the car since October and its mostly been cold.

I do Normal mode

Local roads - one pedal drive and energy saving on - gives me 3 to 3.6. If its cold and a short journey we get 2 to 3... I think heating the car up on a short journey is a killer.
Motorway doing steady 70 mph - one pedal drive off and energy saving off - gives me around 3.6

What sort of driving / settings are you using

My figures for my MG 4 Trophy LR for Nov and Dec have both been 3.5mls/kWh.
Short journeys at this time of year will certainly be far less efficient, as the heater will be on for the whole journey. Mine on the "since last charge" tab on the trip computer barely gets over 2.3 on these short journeys of a couple of miles each way.
Longer journeys, and my monthly readings are far better however at 3.5mls/kWh. Resetting the trip "accumulated total" changes the predicted milage on the GOM too, last time it increased it from 186 to 215 miles.
I leave mine in eco, closest in the MGS 5 would be comfort, keep the temperature at 22 degrees and use the heated seats (Trophy only) when really cold.
@5teep, is correct in bringing up driving style and environment, but as you (@Cartoman) are not new to EV's then are aware of the range drop during winter.
Intelligent battery heating consumes a lot of energy if its left on. This is only really needed for DC high power charging, or peak discharge when demanding lots of power from the battery when driving hard.

My average is 3.0 often falls to 2.9. Can't even remember last time I got above 3.0.

I'm 58 years old and generally drive steadily. Never understand how people get so much more.

I have owned both Gen1 and Gen 2 models of the ZS EV before going for the S5.
We bought the car right at the end of August, so the weather was pretty mild ( ish ).
I did find back then, that the S5 appeared to be wanting charging less frequently than our previous ZS EV Gen2 did.
Of course now the weather has turned much colder, it’s a different story of course.
We like the cabin space to feel both comfortable, welcoming and a warm space.
We have the climate control set to 24 and we do use the heated seats 💺 first thing, when it is really cold.
They are an absolutely brilliant and very welcomed in the winter.
Does the range get a bashing as a result ?.
Yes absolutely it does, but I really don’t care tbh.
Sorry, but I am not willing to compromise any comforts, in exchange for the extra range it returns, but to be cold when driving.
I will just charge more often if necessary.
Many people make the mistake of, when selecting an EV - they base their chose on a summer time usage pattern, or wild WLTP figures.
This never worked on ICE cars, when it came to MPG estimates, so why should EV’s be any different ?.
Select an EV that will satisfy your winter usage pattern with ease.
Then in the summer, you will think the GOM is never reducing 🤣.
EV cabin heaters are generally extremely good, at eating up the range real fast.
They pull a lot of juice, I think it’s almost 7 kw’s !.
Sorry, back to the question:-
Does the S5 eat up the range faster than the ZS EV did ?.
Honest answer, I really don’t see it being any better, or worse than the S5 in winter conditions tbh.
Would I go back to my ZS if it was slightly more efficient in the colder weather ?.
Short answer - NO !,

I drive very economically most of the time, and average 4.8-5.3 doing that. The worst I have got was on an emergency fast drive at 75 on a cold day with all the heating on, and that returned 2.8.

I'm getting similar economy figures and like you it's mainly short journeys but I keep the AC/heating on set at 21C and often preheat the cabin via the app and drive in Standard mode.

If I do a longer journey the economy increases to 3.5+ m/kWh in this weather. The difference being I'm not braking and accelerating as often and I'm not heating the car from scratch as frequently for the miles covered.

I do charge at home so even at 2m/kWh it's only costing me 3.5p/mile which is acceptable for driving how I want in the warm.

To put it in perspective a 100 mile journey at 2m/kWh charging cost 7.5p/kWh is £3.75 the same journey at 3.5m/kWh is £2.14 a difference of £1.61
