With there being such long lead times at the moment, it got me thinking about the ordering process - I haven't bought a brand new car since 2002 (just remembering buying that great car for just 13.5k ) but still mulling over the MG4 at the moment.

I've seen people mention deposits - do these vary by dealer or are they all mostly the same? Are the deposits refundable?

When it comes to financing - do you have to apply/decide on financing options (ie taking MG finance or getting your own finance in place) when an order is placed, or just when the car has arrived?

I last bought a brand new car 3.5 years ago ... well the wife did. That one was £100 deposit (on a credit card) then the balance in cash on collection

I last bought a new car in 1990! (It's so long ago I can't even remember if we got finance - if we did then it'll have been a bank loan rather than dealer finance).

For my MG4 I paid a £339 deposit (via credit card) and the balance will be cash. If you're planning on non-dealer/MG finance then get the loan/finance in principle agreed in advance.

Edit: £339 because I took their service plan, so that amount leaves a nice round £26,600 balance. Deposit is refundable. Also paid by CC so I have S75 protection should the worst happen.

We paid £100 deposit and were told it was refundable. Dealers vary in what they ask for.

Our dealer asked us to fill out the finance application when we did the deposit and agree the price / trade in value in principle and it will be updated/finalised when the car is available.

You are free to arrange your own finance and trade in separately if you want.

I paid £99 deposit at a couple of dealers. One quoted 16 weeks second quoted 20/10.. it's slightly delayed but I want oil leak check/fix done before I collect.
Cancelled first order and have received the refund.
In both cases not commited to finance or cash.

Paid for a new car 7 years ago on a credit card, had 56 days' free credit then did a 24 month balance transfer for 2.9% onto another card. Happy days-doubt if any dealership would wear that now though!

Card fees now are too high vs margin on cars for dealers to accept credit card payment for the full amount.

What irritates me is despite bank rate being as low as I can ever remember until recently, credit card companies still charged a ruinous percentage on outstanding balances, and still put up their charges to retailers.
