I always thought the flat rate of VED, irrespective of how many miles you drive, was not a fair system. Imagine everyone paying a flat £50 entrance fee to a restaurant irrespective of how much you eat or drink.

Average UK mileage is about 7,500 so 3p per mile would cost £225 ... if that were all you payed, I doubt many would object. Add in a modifier for things like size/weight, fuel efficiency/polution* and I think that would be better than the system we have.

* Overly large/heavy vehicles pay extra 1p, higher polluting vehicles pay extra 1p etc ... perhaps zero emission vehicles get -1p reduction.

Just my thoughts :)

If we have to have, Car Tax. 🙄 All cars should pay the same. Say a flat £200.
Personally don't agree with the extra tax for vehicles over £40,000. Why? just coz your lucky enough to be able to afford, a bigger, nicer motor. (Good luck to ya) It's still only taking up One space on the road. Can't see pay per mile ever coming in.
It seems far to complicated to implement. 🤷‍♂️ 🙂👍 Only my opinion of course.

I guarantee that VED (or Road Tax as you insist upon) has nothing to do with the roads ... it is merely another form of general taxation, albeit one that is aimed at motorists. :)

Only going off what I've read. You pay Road Tax to be able to legally drive on a public road. And I know it's called VED, but most of us, still call it Road Tax.
Just as most of us still call the V5 the log book. Particularly of a certain age. 😉🙂👍

You will be required by law to report to a recognized garage to download mileage every year so the my car is new won't matter MOT scenarios,.that's just my opinion?

I would think the only feasible way to collect a pay-per-mile tax will be to add it on to the cost of charging at the 'pump', just like petrol and diesel, they could also add the same tax to our home EV tariff, so it will be pay as you go, just like other fuels.

Does that mean, Granny Chargers, will be a loophole. 😉🙂👍

I've just ordered my new vehicle a horse and cart no tax on that ? Unless they start taxing the amount of shit it drops 😁 .I think MG Clive has got it correct again tax at the pump etc.

That might be the way to go. 🙂👍
Just curious, Clive said just tax your EV tariff. So presumably that's Wall Boxes. With a specific tariff.
I only use a Granny Charger, so don't have an EV tariff as such. Least don't think I do.
So would I get away with it. I'll vote for that one, please. 🤣🙂👍

That could work. Perhaps a new car, goes to to a designated garage in year one and two. And then from year three, reverts to the mot test, every year, thereafter.
