Just some history for context. ICE cars were first sold around the 1890's and fuel duty, ironically at 3p/gallon was not introduced until 1909, nerly 10 years later. So it doesn't matter what fuel is used they will always tax you somehow. Even before cars they taxed horses.

The only way that I can see this working (without massive draconian bureaucracy) is to add the levy onto the unit rate of electricity when charing the car at home or on a public charger - which would be around 10p / unit. It would be quite straighforward to implement as you can only get a SMART tariff if you have a compatible charger / car. Hence the electricity companies already know how much energy is used in car charging.... and low / hybrid users who use a granny charger, wouldnt be impacted as they would still pay the standard tariff / no levy..... but if they do go ahead with this then lets see the money spent on roads and infrastructure. Just compare France to the UK, its a dream driving on their roads / charging compared to the UK.

Complain big time, have marches and rallies and ... what ever else the pollies can ignore and the news talking heads can twist to what ever flavour of trash talk they think will score them points ....... and let us know how it goes, if it works, we might try .... yeah nah, Aussies are so lay back it would take something really serious to get them off their butt and out to protest ..... reintroducing early pub and poker machine trading hours and restricted bottle shop hrs and sales limits ... now that would get them stirred up

That's why it should never be called the "Road Tax", its a tax on car ownership, because all the money goes into a huge Treasury piggy-bank. Little or nothing is 'ring-fenced'.

If you want roads like France, you must agree to similar levels of taxation...

Your mileage is recorded at each MOT test. That would be the easiest way to do it. And yes, I know that the first 3 years on a new car doesn't have an MOT, but they'll get you at the first MOT and then if you've been under-reporting thet'll hit you with a big bill.
Every vehicle that is serviced at any garage reports the mileage to DVLA. Go in for any work on tyres at any quick fit the staff record the mileage of the vehicle.

There are reports that new cars will have to go to an MOT station in years one and two just so the mileage can be recorded not for an MOT.

Said that weeks ago. That's gotta be the simplest way. Then from year three it's recorded at MOT time. Can't be much simpler than that. Don't know how it would work, if you changed your car mid MOT. 🤷‍♂️ 🙂👍

No they are not, yours are, you say you pay ZERO, well, thats a blatant lie, how many tens of thousands have you paid for those solar panels and batteries, and yes I do know how much they cost as we have a full roof installed with max battery allowable, so you are not including that into your costs.

I am so sorry you are not physically capable of driving your car for any length of time, and having one of those USA hideous things, and thats my opinion which I am entitled, is fair enough, but now you work the figures for a similar ICE car along with residuals, your solar panels and battery costs.

And lastly do not say I am wrong, when my post clearly mentions that brands like Polestar, Volvo, Ford, Stellantis and more have ALL stated the same things, even Volvo came out and admitted that EV's are not thats NOT as good as ICE cars, yet, and they cover all costs, as well as environmental, which an EV is not that environmentally friendly, and anyone that says that they are is in their own dream land, and I suppose the batteries are made from fairy dust and not minerals etc that need to be dug up and carted all over the globe before being made into relevant metals for use, carted around the world again, made into batteries and yes you guessed it carted around the globe yet again.... If you think by saying I am wrong, you are right, then, you have my sympathies for living in a world of your own.
There is great TED Talk busting the myth that EV’s are greener; it simply isn’t true if you take the entire lifecycle from manufacture to end of life and the carbon footprint of all the support facilities that all transport requires regardless of its propulsion fuel. Overall a diesel and an EV throughout their lifecycle have the same footprint, (with larger battery EV’s having a slightly higher footprint). We absolutely love our MG4 Trophy Extended Range, but we didn’t purchase it under any illusion it would be saving the polar bears.

Fair warning : moaning to follow....

My over night charging is usually at 7p with Octopus which is about 2p per mile. So at 3p per mile, my tax on electricity for my car is an eye watering 150%. I do about 14k a year as I live in the country ,miles from anywhere. The 3p charge + the £195 EV road tax means my overall road tax will be about £610 year. More than most big diesels or petrols. There will be a tax on breathing next. EV's still cheaper to run, for now. But not if you rely on public charging stations at 70 to 90p per kwh .

Moan over.

I think it is a good idea to MOT all vehicles every year, including those under 3 years old.

People who buy new cars can afford it and nobody seems to check their own cars any more and with bad roads I think it is good to check every car every year. Suspension and tyre problems are common and the Tesla approach of "do nothing until you get an obvious problem" ends up making repairs more expensive and potentially having dangerous cars on the road.

Yeah - They will probably change you for that as well 🤣🥴.
Apparently the Government would 'pick up the tab' for any additional visits to the MOT station.

The TED talk is wrong, as they don't include all the additional carbon footprint items in the ICEV calculations as they do in the BEV calculations. It has been PROVEN that whole lifetime BEV carbon emissions are way lower than for ICEV.

Do you really think china gives a shite about emissions, just like America doesn't give a shite it's just the UK and some others save the planet and all that stuff. 😁😉👍
