Public charging query

I am relatively new to having an EV and I'm probably being very thick but is it possible for me to get my car to charge on a 22kW public charger if I am only using my own cable? My cable is type 2 to type 2. Last time I used a public 22kW charger it only charged at 7kW? Is it because I need a different cable or can you only get a faster charge when you use a CCS tethered type of charger please? I'm not overly techie so you'll have to explain it to me in simple terms, apologies!

You can charge it with your own type 2 to type 2 on a 22kW public chargepoint. The most speed you will get is 7kW though. That's all the car can accept on type 2 on UK models.

For AC you will never get higher than 7kW. (see picture for AC), irrespective of whether it's tethered or not.

For DC (see picture for DC) it can be higher. You will always have a tethered cable for this.

Note that's for UK MGs. Other cars from other brands may get 22kW from AC chargers. But not the current MGs sold in the UK.

Its nothing to do with the cable. It's what's in the machinery of the car that determines this.

Thank you so much, that all makes sense to me! I now know I will only get a couple of hours charge tomorrow night when I come up to see my son at university near Heathrow. The chargers say they are 22kW (I looked on Zapmap) and I need to supply my own cable. A couple of hours should be enough, it's a 98 miles each way journey for me and in summer I can do it there and back with no charging. I'm just playing it safe as clocks have changed and lights etc will be on for most of both journeys so a two hour charge at 7kW will most likely be needed!

I'd just plan an optional stop somewhere for a DC rapid charge, rather than be tied to a slower AC charger in this case.

I've got two hours to kill while I'm sat in a concert, so it will get easily two hours and a bit more charging. Might as well make use of the time while I'm sat there.

You should be able to put 45 to 50 miles in the tank.

You need a 22kw lead.

Not typically cable restricted.

Any decent type 2 lead will get 22kw if your car has a 22kw onboard charger.

But none of the UK MG ZS EVs do - the onboard charger is 7kw so the most you will ever get is just under 7kw after charging losses.

The MG ZSZ EV only has a single phase 6.8 kW charger fitted in the car. Even if a type 2 charger is rated at 22kW the ZS will never get this charge level no mater which cable you use. The only way to charge at higher levels you will need to use a DC rapid charger which will always have a tethered cable with 2 extra sockets below the type2 socket.

Simple answer is no. You'll only ever get 6.8kw.

That listing is bonkers.

The more expensive "11kw" labelled cable is listed at 16amp whereas the cheaper "7kw" is labelled 32amp.

Snake oil! We've reached gold plated HDMI audiophile territory now...

Use a 22 kW charger lead probably overkill unless find 3 phase AC ..the local university has 10 x 22 kW chargers (free after 5pm but believe split by 2 so 11kW each (may be same in UK)... the maximum see is 9.9 kW which is not too bad as our sons highland 3 (twice $) is capable of 250kW max but only charged at 11kW on the same charger when visiting.

I picked my daughter up from Heathrow yesterday. I have a Trophy SR and my journey is, by coincidence also 98m. I stopped here which is 10m from T5 (also only 6m from Royal Holloway if that's where your son is) and has a 50W CCS charge point, so may be really handy for you. I only needed at 15-20% top-up so took a few mins while waiting for her to confirm she'd collected her bags before going to the terminal. It's also Electroverse compatible, so I used my Octopus card, get 8% discount and it just gets added to my electricity bill.

Thing is.

The car has been sold with 2 different flavors of charger.

In the UK they were sold with 1 phase charger onboard, so if you have one of those you can get as many 3 phase chargers as you want you will never go above 1 phase 32A (7KW)

In Europe there were an option for a 3 phase charger, that does 3 phase 16A, which is 11KW.

Please understand that when charging with AC, the actual charger, that takes the AC voltage from your outlet and converts it into DC, is in the "engine bay" of the car, the box on the wall is not actually a charger, it's "just" a box with som relays and some electronics.

All the box on the wall does, is tell the car, what capabilities it posesses and also what current, the cable car accept.

If you want to know if your car has a 3 phase charger go to the car, open the charge flap and open the top part of the charge connector in the car.

If you have a 3 phase charger, there will be pins in the 2 holes in the bottom row of holes.

If there are no pins your car is 1 phase.
