Rear offside suspension clonking...

Morning all,

I wonder if anyone has come across this before...

My 5 (21 plate) has been pretty good but recently I have been noticing a clonking from the rear offside which I believe is coming from the suspension. It appears after the vehicle has sat for a short while (hour or two) and disappears after a couple of minutes of driving, leading me to suspect the damper/shock might have some sort of issue.

Is anyone aware if the rear suspension uses any liquid-filled bushings as these might also do it as they warm up through use?

I shall need to have a dig around underneath the car and put some load on all the joints with a lever but if anyone else has noticed this did they find out what it was?

Right. Having had a bit of a dig around I have concluded that the rear offside shock/damper has failed and indications are that this is a fairly common fault from 2021 vehicles.

Now to try to find a replacement pair...I can fit them myself, being reasonably good at spannering but they do see to be hard to find.

Should not such a "failure" be covered by the famous "7 Year Warranty"? (And yes, I know it comes with a multitude of caveats!)

Well indeed, although dampers are "consumable items" and so pose a problem.
I ask the MG dealer for a pair and they say "Yes, that will be a 4 month wait." They can't (won't?) give me any helpful information about them so I can't go to alternative suppliers...SAIC have not provided information to the database owners regarding parts listings so the usual suppliers of such things don't know what to give me.

I think I will be taking one off to measure it up to contact manufacturers.

Whilst I generally like my 5, it is things like this that really irritate me.

A lot of the MG5 components are from the VW parts bin, so it might be worth looking in that direction.

That's a good steer, thanks. I think I will just need to remove one of them and measure it up to make sure I get the correct units.

Also, MG originals are £92 each!

Have a look at an Octavia estate. That should have similar characteristics.

I have decided that I shall take one off to measure it up and take to the parts store.

Shock absorber weeping - anyone else? thats how my rear shock looked. part was very easy for my garage to get (MG Crawley)

Mine is dry so far and is only a bit off when cold...once it warms up it is less problematic but I can still hear/feel the rear wheel oscillating a bit unter the right conditions. Mine is beyond the 3 year anniversary which is why I'm trying to find shocks that fit but this is proving interesting.
I don't particularly want to fit the OE ones as they are clearly rather poor in the first instance.

Ours starting making a slight knocking when cold when about 18 months old. I forgot to mention it at the first two services and at the 3rd it was just out of warranty. It's weeping very slightly now. I wonder if Cleveley EV have an alternative brand shock?

Obtaining aftermarket units is becoming infuriating as I refuse to pay £90+ per unit for OEM shocks, without the bracket and bushes! It is getting to the point where I shall just take one off my car and flop it on the bench at the local supplier!

SAIC/MG have not provided any information to the keepers of the usual parts databases so the usual online suppliers say "don't stock that" as their database doesn't contain any details of compatible parts.

If someone has one, could they measure up the extended and compressed lengths and the rod diameter please? I’m getting to the point where I’m becoming really irritated by the lack of dealer-supplied information on parts for these vehicles.
