Slightly pathetic data limitation - 1GB, MG4 Trophy

It would be nice if the option was given to purchase more data on a monthly basis.
BYD is the same with 1GB free. Wife run out once. There is the option to see what apps consume what.
99% was Spotify. Maps and navigation use peanuts.

You can enter android settings on the infotainment, if you follow tricks on how to do it. From there, you can connect your phone's hotspot to the infotainment. Bam, you're not using any built in data (other than what tbox uses).

Been doing this on mine since day one.

You can use Wi-fi directly from settings, what's the point of doing that ?

You can connect the car to the hotspot from the infotainment menu?

Must be a luxury spec thing then, because standard doesnt have that.

I think @hojnikb means that the car can connect to a hotspot created by your phone (hence using the phone data not the built in data), and I think @Mouss is talking about the hotspot the car offers, in case you want your phone to use the built in data from the car.

Yep, I got a Lux and I don't need to go in Android settings to connect to Wi-Fi.
But just tell me why you need Wi-Fi with Standard/SE version: there isn't Amazon Music, GPS or weather.
Maybe you got a MY2024 ?

I wasn't talking about car embed hotspot, but Wi-Fi.
WIth Luxury (Trophy) models, you can connect the infotainment to Wi-Fi (mobile hotspot, home Broadband) once the car is started.

Well, sideloaded apps can take quite a bit of data, also updating them as well.

What exactly happens once the data allowance has been fully used up? On the Trophy/Luxury it’s 3 GB per month, and on the Standard MY22 it’s 1 GB per month.
Does the mobile data connection continue at a reduced speed (e.g., 32/64 kbps), or is it completely cut off?

I’m a driver from Germany, and with our mobile phone contracts here, once you’ve used up your data allowance, the connection usually continues at 32/64 kbps until the next billing period.

In the UK the data connection still works for iSmart functionality, it's just the other data functions (like weather etc.) that stop when the allowance is used up. My early SE SR (MY22 Standard) doesn't have any data services, except for iSmart, so the allowance limit is academic. :)

Not so academic, when you start sideloading apps and allow them to use data. Then that 1GB is very smol

I am using android auto all the time so I have not run out of data to see what happens.
My wife's BYD when you run out data (she can't be bothered with android auto lol) apps don't function, live data on navigation is dead and also voice commands! Limit is the same by the way; 1 GB.

With my previous car (Tesla) I was one of the lucky ones that had premium connectivity for life. They changed it now and if you want unlimited data it is a tenner per month and they grab you by the balls since you cannot have either carplay or android auto...

This is due to the way that the UK mobile market works. While I have a business EE network sim that is costing me about £23+VAT per month for unlimited everything to get an all networks data only sim (to provide good UK coverage), I would be paying about the same amount for 5GB of data per month.

The government (and its regulator) are really only focused on raising the most income possible every time frequency ranges are released or come up for renewal. There has been little or no focus on forcing the network operators to offer full UK coverage or mult-network solutions to provide the best possible coverage at a fair price.

I would guess MG entered the UK market without fully understanding just how much it would cost them to provide any level of data service to the cars that it enabled such a feature. Paying out for 60 months of data on cars that are highly discounted to get sales is something of a problem, especially if only a very small % of owners see the issue.

I have never seen it mentioned on a brochure the limit you were allowed, do you have a copy?

I read recently that they were only free for 3 years and the next subscription is built into the servicing cost, not sure how true that is

Of course the data limit is NOT in any brochure. I was saying having any data is not a bonus feature as the car is advertised with data and live services, This is in the brochure. I complained to the Advertising Std Agency and they upheld my comments/complaint.

To be fair, MG4 has Wi-Fi connectivity so you could share data from tour smartphone to reconnect infotainment to live trafic, weather and Amazon Music
Yes I perhaps could, if I spend 5-10 mins doing so before I set off. But we are not allowed to hold our phones etc etc and I want to sit down. drive off and check on the car's screen. That's how my other cars worked and MG advertise this feature. But data runs out before I reach the end of the month.

I cannot see how my Trophy car uses 3GB for 2 hrs use a day, 6 days a week. Just using the traffic screen and DAB radio. Radio = nil data before someone says. LOL

Yes the weather is there all the time so add that data consumption.

So 12 hrs a week or 360 hrs per month. For some coloured lines and an image of a cloud and rain symbols to use up 3 GB........hmm.

From memory my Audi, with a usage counter, and would never reach 1 GB.
