I know this has been discussed before but those threads are quite old so thought I'd start a new one... I'm about to get a MG 5 2022 pre facelift which I know isn't rated for towing. I'd like to install a towbar on it and I see there appear to be a few available from Brink and GMK now for 2020 on. Has anyone tried this or know if the mounts are present on the MG 5? There's a video on Youtube of someone fitting one in France but I can't figure out if it's facelift or not!
I am planning to use it for a bike rack and after researching it I believe it's not illegal to fit a towbar on a vehicle but it would be illegal to tow with it. I'll inform my insurer of course if I do it. I did exactly the same on my Mk1 Nissan Leaf which wasn't approved for towing either. Brink made a towbar for that vehicle and it simply had a couple of little stubs on the towball that prevented you from using a trailer, but not a bike rack. It also had a "not suitable for towing" sticker.
My reasoning is that we now have 2 ebikes and really the only way to transport them is on a towbar mounted rack due to weight. I don't fancy trying to lift them onto roof racks and boot-mounted carriers don't have the capacity for ebikes.
