USB Music

Quite honestly if I was working on the project I wouldn't have wasted much time on the ability of the media player to play tracks off a USB. With so many users using Car Play, Android Auto, Spotify, bluetooth to use phone as a media storage device etc etc it would be the lowest of the low priority
It feels like yesterday I was super excited to have my first CD player in a new car. Before I know it I’m reading this thinking “why are people still using USB sticks?” 😂 (usb stick users, I am not maligning or judging you!)

I use a usb stick, don't use my phone for music. I'm not maligning or judging you.😂

Is this manual available online, please?
See this thread…

I've found a permanently connected USB stick to be the most reliable and low-effort way to have music in the car. We've had this on the original ZS EV (couldn't easily select specific folders), my e-Niro (better control of folders, but still not ideal) and now my wife's MG4 (replacing the ZS EV). I'll try the above advice re the MG4 interface - thank you. This could be the best yet ;-)

I haven't used a USB stick for Movies or Music for playback in a car in at least the last 12-15 years and I had a quick poll on one of the developers forums last night and there was only one out of the 60 that responded that still used USB

Interesting - maybe that's an illustration of changing demographics (I'm most certainly in the "old school" category). However I'm tech savvy (I'm a computer specialist by profession) but find connecting a phone every time I get in the car to be both unreliable and a hassle. Permanent USB (I source low-profile ones so they're completely unobtrusive and don't get knocked etc) to be the most trouble-free and convenient method for in-car music. If you're already connecting your phone in order to use other Android Auto or Apple Carplay features (satnav etc) then it makes perfect sense to use the same connection for audio. However if (like me) you're quite happy with the built-in satnav, and/or (like me) you also use the phone satnav as a "second opinion" with the phone mounted in a dash cradle, then the USB approach is ideal :)

Do a poll here!
USB +1 :)

Hi All (@Purclewan in particular) - I did some testing today in my Trophy as I have a USB stick with music organised into folders either for Albums or Artists (I have some sub folders too with different albums by the same artist as well). When I first opened the USB Music player the infotainment showed me a list of all the songs it had found on the stick and started playing. On closer inspection I noticed that the list on the left where the songs were listed was titled "Play All" so I tried touching the screen where it said that - to my delight I found that it is then possible to get a folder view of the USB stick and you can select the folder you want to play from (even the sub-folders) and that you can then choose from just the music in that folder.

Hope this is helpful!
Davn , It appears you can see folders after all. 👍

From the reports I'm seeing on the operating system and software in general I wish I did, but no I'm a developer at a sports streaming service.

I guess thats the thing, especially with EV's. Many user don't rely on the built in SatNav, maybe for local journeys it's OK but until route planning with charging stops is included out of the box many will prefer to use Waze, Apple Maps, ABRP via Carplay or Android Auto.

It's interesting how demographics of users change, at my current place of work when we launched 6 years ago a majority of user accessed the service via web and cast or cable connected to TV now a majority access via our app for smart TV's, games consoles, fire sticks etc.

I mainly use Carplay or AA for music, but still keep a USB stick in the car for times when I don't have the phone at hand.

Thanks for the info on the folder view, I'll have to give that a go as it currently has everything in a single list!

One other thing I haven't been able to do when playing back from the USB is to carry on where I left off.

For example I could have a 2 hour podcast episode on the USB stick, and if I'm 1hr in when leaving the car, it would be so nice if it was 1hr in the next time I used the car.

RIght now it goes right back to the start, it does not save your position.

I'd be interested to know which service you work for (are you able to post the name here??) - we actually got a rebate of license fee from the BBC, as I was so disguisted by their late behaviour, I took down our aerial, removed all ability to receive broadcast TV and made our household solely streaming service (we subscribe to 3 - Netflix, Prime, Disney+). Never missed it for a second (we get news via a couple of newspaper subscriptions, so can consume news when and where we want).
