The MG ZS Excite EV 2019 displays the current battery charge status on the car’s display using a meter of up to eight bar segments. So when only the first bar segment is illuminated, does this mean that the battery charge level could be anything from 12.5 % to just under 25 %? Similarly 25 % to just under 37.5 % for when the first two bar segments are illuminated?

Sounds about right. You could buy a OBD dongle and plug it into the car hook it up to an app like Car Scanner and read the SOC on that.

I think my 2020 exclusive has 10 bars, thus 10% of usable battery per bar, or 16 miles roughly.

I have this in my notes. Unfortunately, I didn't note where I got it from:

8 : 91-100%
7 : 80-91%
6 : 69-80%
5 : 58-69%
4 : 47-58%
3 : 36-47%
2 : 25-36%
1 : <25% (HV battery light comes on)

Mine is a 2021 model, but I expect that the 8-brick display would be the same.

Edit: Looks like it's from here:
