Which EV, new or used, would you change your MG for?

Just ordered the new Dacia Bigster for the misses (the one on the right) 😂 took it on a two year deal just in case but on the test drive (hybrid 155) it performs like a dream and on pcp it was £200.00 pm should be here in a month so looking forward to it.

Interesting - would like to see how you get on!

Reading all the comments and suggestions, it is definitely horses for courses. Buying private means a considerable commitment ( either cash or PCP) for the purchaser. Reading the forum I have come to the conclusion that reliability seems to be the key. Those that have had "issues" with their car and the dealership are more likely to want to change brand. I have owned my MG5 PFL for a year now and it has been superb in almost every respect. our MAIN car is a 2020 Lexus NX300h, but my wife and I prefer to drive the MG. It is NOT exactly the quality of the Lexus but to be honest it is such an easy car to drive and live with! I bought the car (used) instead of a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The cost differential was minimal.

After a two hour test drive (from a Ford garage!) I was blown away! My only concern has been reliability (long term) but after one year's ownership the car has been faultless. Kate and James on YouTube can testify to the longevity of the MG5.

Please be careful what you go for - I am NOT a fan of French electrics (but I am open to change!) - and would choose a known reliable model.

Two important factors come to mind for me:-

1) Reliability

2) Does the car suit your needs? Is it big enough, range is adequate, warranty and service good enough.

3) Is it in my budget?

Good luck with with you choice!

My option: Toyota BX4e?

My lease has just over a year to go and I'm looking at what is available in our price range.

We are both huge fans of the handling of the MG4, but less so the ride as time goes by. It doesn't help that we use a road at least twice a day that is literally round the corner from ours that is awful to drive down; full of bumps, potholes and imperfections left by countless utilities having dug up the road.
A more forgiving suspension would be welcome.
Then, we need a larger boot. We realised it was small when we test drove it and thought we could live with it, but it has been challenging, especially going away 4 up.
Finally, I need something a bit easier to get in and out of. My Mum has a Yeti which is really easy for me to hop in and out of.

WRT handling, I would prefer a RWD car. The following that are currently in our budget are:

Enyaq.
My fave on paper.

Elroq.
Wondering if it's big enough?

Ioniq 5.
On the test drive list but Mrs S says it is too retro.

ID4
Dissed by a few on here

The FWD ones are:

Ariya.
My eldest's friend has one & is very impressed.

Niro.
Kona.
These next two related cars I struggle with. The Niro I find more
conventional, but the Kona has a bigger boot.

Atto 3.
Another Chinese contender. Cheap and well-equipped.
Edited to add: quirky interior and who wants "BUILD YOUR DREAMS" across the boot lid?
New cars apparently will just have "BYD".

Three contenders that disappeared off my list price wise were the Berlingo, the Scenic and the BZ4X, although I think the last one is a bit small and the charging capabilities limited.

I don't buy new cars often and have had the MG4 just shy of 2 years & I plan to keep it for 10 years. Apart from a few software niggles it is a great car. It is comfortable, plenty of room, has great handling & performance & the range is fine even though a lot of new models have bigger batteries & more range but at a higher price. I don't have a single rattle or any ill fitting parts, nothing has gone wrong except the rear undertray which was fixed under warranty in January last year & have had no software updates since new. I'll get those at its first service in August.

If I was in the market for a new EV, it would have to be a hatchback or SUV and Chinese. The BYD Sea Lion and MGS5 would be 2 contenders.

From Hyundai's web page:
Hyundai Promise cars come with a minimum of 24 months Hyundai warranty, that can be upgraded to a 5-years Hyundai warranty (at additional cost, contact your retailer for further information). To be classified as a Hyundai Promise car, the Hyundai car must have less than 60,000 miles on the clock or be no older than 36 months old.
LOL, how to make something simple sound like they are giving you something.
So all Promise cars are less than 3 years old and come with a minimum 2 years warranty. Well that adds up to 5, the standard warranty anyway.

also from their website
'You can buy with peace of mind when purchasing a Used Car from one of our retailers, whether you purchase a Hyundai Promise vehicle or a standard Hyundai Approved Used Car, both come with the balance of the manufacturer warranty for cars less than 5 years old.'

Not sure what the upgrade to 5 years is as not an expert on Hyundai but I wasn't aware of any warranty extensions so are these retailer sold third party warranties ?

I'm more or less the same. I've had the undertray issue, the charging port lights failed and a door locking button failed, but none of these interfered with my use of the car and they were all fixed under warranty. I have the dealer from hell, but I will simply go elsewhere in future.

If anything fatal happened to Caliban I'd probably just look for a like for like replacement, though I might possibly consider the SE LR, as I'm doing more road trips than I envisaged when I originally bought the car. (And the reason for that is that it's such a great drive.)

There are plenty of good EVs out there I like . Many of them are just in the luxury car range . On a pension I just can't afford the extra £2000 VED for the first 5 years and secondly my wife would brain me 😁

Then the answer is simple, buy a nearly new pre April 1st and save the initial depreciation and the luxury VED. You could leap from just in the luxury range to very luxury. :)

It was merely hypothetical . I'm talking a couple of years down the line at least by which time the nearly new April 1st wouldn't apply . It would be a three or four year old car year old car :)

I feel you, I've had 2 MG5s in 4 years and it's a great car to drive but it's so low that getting in and out is becoming painfull. With this in mind one of my first checks on any car that interests me is the height of it, I also prefer a more upright driving position.
I've not test driven anything yet as it's not going to happen till next year, retirement looming and a need for a car that will last and do everything else I want it do.
