Having run my MG ZS for 5 years, almost without a hiccup, I am looking for an MG4 with 280 mile range.

I am not up with the latest batteries etc, so am asking for advice on the best model for my next several years.

My budget is roughly £10,000 plus the part ex of the ZS (Nov 2020). I am hoping for £7500 + for the ZS, which has full service history etc..

Any tips etc gratefully received....:)

But who wants to drive for 280 miles without a stop? The vast majority of drivers don't need 280 miles of range. 🤷‍♂️
I did not ask that. I was after more general info including what the different battery types there are, and advice about them, and the car models.

I think the bigger battery gives you flexibility on a journey. I have a long range (64 kWh) and yesterday I did an airport run, 59 miles round trip, nearly all motorway at 60 to 70mph, about 3 degrees and used 27% battery so that is about 218 miles range, which I think is pretty good in winter.

If you're OK with the official WLTP range of 280 miles then the MG4 Trophy Long Range (or the MG4 SE Long Range, both use the same 64 kWh battery pack) will suit ... pick the Trophy if you want more of the bells and whistles. If you need a real-world range of 280 miles then it has to be the MG4 Trophy Extended Range (77 kWh battery pack) as @MG Clive said. :)

Yes, sorry if I was little abrupt. I find, with my Gen 1 ZS, there is usually no problem geting to where I want too, but often the destination is well into the country side. So I need a reasonable reserve of power to get around there, where there might not be a charger for 20 or 30 miles. At least a rapid charger anyway.

I think the 64kWh will suit, so looking there atthe moment...

Thanks for help...:)

You'd be surprised. Quite a lot of people with ICE cars insist they need more range to tow the boat or caravan they don't have to the far flung destination they never visit - just in case!

Thats odd, i get that out of my X Power at motorway speeds, maybe it is more efficient ( in eco😉) than i thought . 👍

Recent purchaser of an MG4 here, so I have my finger on the current market pulse.

For £17-18k budget, you can almost stretch to a new MG4 (2022-2025 model), most ADs are clearing stock for about £20k trophy spec.

If looking used, your budget can get you an xPower.

I opted for a 2 year old trophy, full AD service for £14.5k with 26k miles, is delivered this afternoon!

What surprised me the most was most used cars do not have service history, or only partial SH. If you are buying used I would insist on FSH.

Be aware that MG have just launched a new MG4, with a much nicer looking interior, 64kW LFP battery and lots of the foibles sorted (software, cup holders, wireless charging AND apple car play etc), if these things appeal then maybe hold out or stretch to a new 2026 model. Also be aware that there is a new MG4 urban model, which appears to be quite different with MORE space but smaller battery, front wheel drive and lower price.

During the recent cold and rain, our ER got the equivalent of 250 miles on a trip to Weston Super Mare on the M6 and M5. In warmer times, 320 has been achieved on a Heathrow round trip.

FWIW I think the best 2nd hand option is an MG4 SE SR range bur a later model that has
1)Rear Wiper (you never need it)
2)Sat Nav (you never use it )
3)Automatic front grill open and closing ( no idea if it is of any use)
4)Rear passenger hand hold (No one ever uses them)
5)middles seat head rest (May not be able to be used as a taxi if missing)
6)one pedal driving (The BEES_KNEES, excellent option)

One pedal driving is worth all the rest. I was against it but now I love it. The reason I say get this model is that I don't know how much more expensive it would be in buying it 2nd hand but when you come to sell it, it should sell better. As others have said it you want LFP batteries and you don't want to carry a heavier weight 90% of the time for that 10% long distance driving.

I hope this is what you wanted.

I think one pedal drive is a bit marmite, I just don't like it. I keep trying it but still prefer regen 3 and the brake pedal.

I find the rear wiper very useful as I've removed the centre headrest so I can see out the back.

For me the Trophy has a couple things I like:
1, 360 camera, great when parking as you can see if you are straight in a space.
2, Heated front seats and steering wheel, which does mean you don't need the heating on so high which helps withe energy consumption in winter.

For me the best thing is the heated steering wheel, never had one before and it's been great as I get cold hands.
