Which? report on MG4 lane keep assist issues reported by This Is Money

This is an interesting statement from MG:

"A spokesperson said: 'If a customer does feel this function is oversensitive in its current calibration it can be turned off via the touchscreen menu, but we would reiterate that we have had no safety-related reports from customers."

Wow. I find this amazing. I myself sent an email to my dealer in August last year saying I felt LKA was dangerous and I am sure many others would have done similar. For MG to say they have no safety related reports is clearly untrue unless none of the dealers fed it back up to them but I'm sure they would have done.

I've had my MG4 for two months but that was more than enough time for me to ensure I turn LKA off before any journey long or short. It's all over the place, sometimes it'll actually to steer towards the white lines on roads, other times it barely kicks in at all but there's no real consistency to it. Overall it's just far too sensitive.

FWIW I find LKA to be OK (now) on my SE. I have it set to Moderate sensitivity, as I believe that this is what will have been used for fine-tuning the system in development (as Moderate is the default setting when you first get the car).

However I know that the Trophy spec has a slightly different implementation vs the SE.

Indeed. My R24 (still!) Trophy defaults to ELK (Emergency Lane Killyou).

The bigger issue is that due to EU regulation this feature cannot be permanently turned off, it can only be turned off for that specific drive, once you re-start the vehicle it is back on again.

The bigger issue is that due to EU regulation this feature cannot be permanently turned off, it can only be turned off for that specific drive, once you re-start the vehicle it is back on again.

The bigger issue here unfortunately is how flawed the MG implementation is. On most cars, if the car disagrees with you, or feels it needs to, it doesnt resist you as hard as MG, so not only does it actively mis-steer you, but it also then fights you for control. Most require much less resistance to revert to driver, whilst the MG is quite beligerant.
Also, if its unsure, it acts up/assumes rather than falling back to driver as quickly as it should.

I've driven multiple Hyundai, a Lexus and others with these sorts of systems, and none of them as aggressively try to kill you as the LKA/TJA of the MG, which is exactly what Which are trying to highlight, nothing else they've tested has been this intrinsically problematic.

Throw on top probably related very nasty phantom braking, and you have a potential recipe for disaster.

A friend has just sent me the link. A quick look through the comments show that this is not an MG issue alone.
Also, frankly, if the article was from anyone other than Which, it would carry more weight. They've long since jumped the shark regarding their original reputation.
Can the MG implementation be improved? Yes, and MG said as much in the article. Is this an MG issue? Doesn't seem like it from the comments.

MG4 Lane keep assist

I won't be writing to Which. The reason ? I don't believe the LKA on the MG4 to be any different to any other car with this awful invention. 3rd car with it , and I've driven others to name but a few BMW , Toyota , Hyundai, I have always ended up turning it off as it's invasive and doesn't work...

Interesting comments from MG on calibration of ADAS System, All my problems began after windscreen replacement and issues with calibration ADAS camera.
The camera was replaced twice with with same fault, (being unable to complete calibration and failing at about 70%). After Various Modules were updated the technician advised that it calibrated to 100% very quickly over a very short distance.
I believe its this calibration process that influences how the car reacts and explains how some people find the system acceptable.

I've contacted Which with details of my conversation I had with MG on the issue and MG's poor response. I would suggest that other owners who feel the same way also contact Which. Frankly, I find this unresolved situation 18 months after first being reported shows contempt to the customer as far as I am concerned.

Having recently purchased a MY25 Kia Stonic after owning a MY21 Kia Stonic, I can categorically say that Kia have nailed it just right: it was never aggressive on the MY21, in fact a bit too hesitant to engage even on motorways and A roads. Very occasionally it would give a hint of getting it wrong but an ever so slight resistance at the wheel was enough for it to disengage instantly and then re-engage gently.
In the MY25 they nailed it just right: more eager on motorways and A roads, quite decent even on B roads, yet easy to disengage at will.
Plus they still use buttons on the steering wheel for direct on/off without complicated menus.
It is not self drive of the likes of Tesla FSD or Ford Mach-E, but it is the best of the rest.
I so do wish the MG4 had the same system.

Whilst I dont know how they system works on the MG4, I've done a calibration on a VW T-Roc (a few years ago now - via ODIS/special target), you can either do a static or dynamic (i.e. semi-auto whilst driving) calibration. Autoglass (and national windscreens), will not touch the settings on the car, despite telling your insurance company that they can recalibrate - to be fair National windscreens were honest about this, Autoglass just wouldn't start the job after a fault code scan.

Posted this in one of the MG4 Facebook groups today about the same topic, but was pretty much flawless since picking it up in December 2022...until pretty much the week we brought home our baby from hospital. Since then it's been steering us in random directions and suddenly giving us the phantom emergency braking, including one when turning into a junction and just left us frozen solid mid-turn.

Going in for updates on Friday, so I'm hoping things are better after that. I'm a little nervous about taking the little one out in it at the minute.

It’s not really EU regulation, it’s a UK regulatory framework that the EU decided to adopt. And it doesn’t ban disabling LKA, you just won’t get a five-star safety rating.
