Worn out seat! Anyone else?

Anyone else got waring to the seats? 1Year 8 months old.

I have the top of the range ZS EV Long Ranger with what I believe is PU Leather which looks different to the photos posted above.

I know it is not real leather but is the PU Leather also having similar problems?

I had PU Leather in our old caravan and after 10 odd years the surface started lifting away from the backing, I would hate the same to happen to the car in a few years time.
 
I’m currently going through the process making a formal claim against MG as they won’t entertain repairing or replacing my driver’s seat cushion on my ZS EV which is suffering from degradation on the offside. I have been asked to submit an independent report with costings for remediation. I was unsurprised to see another MG driver’s seat with identical faults caused by the substandard materials sat in the workshop of the specialist repairer. The upholsterer said I’ve repaired lots of these as it’s a very common fault with MG’s! See photograph of this seat already in the workshop.

That looks like he seat from the original Gen1 ZS EV as the Gen 2 has the “carbon effect” pleather material, same problem on both models regardless.
But the Gen 1 should look a better job, as it’s an easier match of a plain material.
It would be very interesting to know what he used to replace the damage, did he just replace the bolsters or make a complete new swab ?.
What material did he use - leather ?.
The cost of the repair would also be handy.
The fact that he has done “loads” tells you all you need to know really.
It should tell the manufacturer the same message also, you have a problem with the material on your seats are clearly NOT fit for purpose as well.
 
I've just spotted some piping on the driver's seat is damaged on mine. 22 plate mg4 trophy, a smidge under 10000 miles on the odo.

Yes, you’re correct. Mine is a gen 1 and I’ve been pursuing MG for a few years. I understand from claims experts that I have up to six years within which to make a claim for ‘not fit for purpose’ and I originally went down this route. However having visited two respected MG dealersips, one from whom I purchased the vehicle new, however they both tow the party line insomuch as they just refer to the warranty which is of course useless. I then formally wrote to the dealership from whom I purchased the car, Glyn Hopkin, but I am saddened to report that their response was an exercise in obfuscation as they kept referring to warranty despite me clearly stating this was not a warranty claim.
Anyway I then discovered that I could make a claim under section 75 as I paid my £500.00 deposit by Barclaycard despite the value of my claim likely to exceed the deposit amount. I have to say the Barclaycard are being extremely professional and helpful. The reason I decided to go down the Section 75 route is because I recién it is much easier for a simple layman like myself.
MG must address this substandard seating material issue because it’s likely to become worse and worse as time goes on. I’m delighted with the vehicle so far other than the quality of the seating of course.

My MG ZS EV mk 1 2020 (70) plate has just achieved 7,985 miles this week and has been well looked after from day one.

The attached photo is how the drivers seat looks now, but I did report this fault over 18 months back to my service dealer Chorley Motors in Burnley, who said "it was just a crease in the leather", but when I didn't agree with that point, I was told it was not covered under warranty.

I am at a "decision time" now, as the car is coming to the end of the PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) contract and my options going forward are:

1. Keep the car by paying the £9,750 balloon payment
OR
2. Handing the car back to the finance company
OR
3. Trading it in for a newer model, using the equity left in the vehicle as part deposit.

I today valued my car on We buy any car, Motorway and CarWow and it is valued around £11,242.

he price has been dropping in value by around £250.00 per month over the past few months despite only having a very low mileage - 7,985 on the clock.

So come November when the PCP contract finishes, there will be no equity left to use in the car as a Trade In.

I have decided therefore to simply hand the car back to the finance company, even though I have loved this vehicle since day one and still do, but technology has moved on big time since the Mk 1 came out and a much better range on newer models is now available.

I am looking for a slightly larger SUV now and was hoping the new revamped MG HS was going to have an ALL ELECTRIC model in the range, but sadly that didn't happen.

So my next move I feel after looking at all the options and cars I like, I will hopefully be moving over to a new all electric Ford Explorer Premiere, but for me, buying another electric car and losing so much equity (which I didn't expect), means I will move to leasing my next vehicle instead, which makes it cheaper on the monthly payments and without the worry of a PCP balloon payment at at the end of the contract either.

We still have a second car which is an MG4 X Power that we also love, but for my car, come November, I will sadly be moving away from the MG brand.

Here’s a copy and paste from the quotation I received for the seat repair:-

1. MG- LX20 MX:
Driver seat base bolster (left side of the seat base – in/out section).
The cover is made of Vinyl that start to crack along the entire length of the bolster.
Problems like this usually occur due to poor quality material and the high temperatures in the car.

2. The seat can be repaired by removing it from the car, removing the upholstery from the cushion,
ripping out the damaged bolster, sewing in a new one, fitting back the seat into the car.

3. Replacing the bolster costs £350.00 plus VAT = £420.00 Total (including labour and parts)
This job will take 6h to be completed.

How old is your car and what mileage? I'd say you're right, it will only get worse - see the photo I've just posted!

How did you do the section 75 claim? Did you have to pay for the repair and claim it back? Did you have to get multiple repair quotes?

I think there will be a few of us doing similar, so any guidance you can provide will help others 🤞
