MG4 Software Update Thread

If you do an OTA update and brick your car then you've got a problem and the blame game starts with did you do it correctly, was your internet connection disrupted etc. If the dealer does it then it's their problem and they can get support from MG.
There is one user on here who has a bricked car stuck on the ramps at their dealer because something went wrong with an update.
Software updates have been using a hash to verify the integrity of the file. If anything is modified or missing a new hash is given and the update is not applied. This has been the case for years.

Im not being nelly negative but it would be nice to not to have ot go to the dealer to update bugs when lots of cars OTA update. Especially if they start charging.

Yes it would be convenient. But the history with MGs (including the 4) is that cars can get bricked and while that is the case it is far better if it happens at the dealer.

If it's the infotainment system only.
It really should be as easy as when you get an update for your phone.
Download, system checks the hash as already said and then install the update.
Phones have being doing this for years so should be easy enough.
But then again it is MG 🫤🤣

So, infotainment running R30 went nuts today, screen bouncing all over the place. Took it to my dealer who was close by. They’ve apparently got a whole bunch of updates thru from MG. Whilst I type this they’re doing an update to the BMS and on Monday it’s booked in for further updates to the infotainment and the main drivers display. Slightly worryingly my i-SMART APP keeps sending notifications that the power steering has now failed…. Oh mines a Trophy
I’ll try and get the version numbers of what updates have been done

Fingers crossed it's an update to the power steering software which is causing the notifications.
Might be an idea for your sanity to switch off the notifications until they've finished 😁

Thanks for the update. There are several issues on R29 I'm seeing on my Trophy but nothing that is too invasive. I'm holding off for reports of more stability before requesting updates.

Here's hoping you have better luck with this one... I really do wish for this to go well.
It does beg the question though why isn't there an over the air update for the infotainment system that way we can all get the latest update.
Sounds like an advertised feature they're still not using !

I thought it could be useful to have a thread for software update news. I am collecting my car tomorrow and have a feeling that I will be back several times for software updates. Perhaps we can use this thread to keep each other informed when updates appear (I wouldn't rely on my dealer to be on the ball with this)
I think a sticky would be in order for this thread, Maybe just the actual latest version number for the SE and Trophy....not sure how we would actually be aware of the latest version though unless a technician from MG updated this forum with their wisdom🤔

My Trophy, which I've had on the road since October 5th, went in to dealer today for 3 software updates, 1 for the BMS, 1 for the head unit, and 1 for something to do with handshaking/comms ??? So including the update to R30 for the Infotainment thats 4 updates in total

Took delivery yesterday of my Trophy. This is the software version.. am I right in saying this is way outdated? Was expecting to see R30?

That’s terrible if that’s the case. They apparently ‘updated’ it yesterday. They must think I’m an idiot to believe that R24 is the latest when there’s people with R29 and R30!!

Well I took my trophy in for updates primarily for the Android Auto fix. The infotainment is now R30 but the AA remains unfixed.

The worst part is my driver monitor system is now WORSE! Instead of silently nagging it is reporting "Driver monitor system fault consult handbook". It constantly pings when in ready mode. The options for it in the infotainment are missing so it cannot be silenced or disabled.

I'm not sure what the hell has happened.

It could be a badly applied update. Some have reported needing to get them reinstalled to make them work properly. I am not sure why this would be the case but it seems the update process is fragile and this is perhaps why we don’t have over-the-air.

Does yours have the little IR sensor on the steering column, or have you got one of the new ones without it? (Mine doesn’t have it)
