MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

TBH after one week now there has to be no way MG UK (HQ) not the dealers do not know what they are dealing with. The fact that one dealer has paused test drives speaks volumes. Another is having the engine rebuilt/car swapped out.

Like the other MG steering column issue whether this gets to a recall type situation - I would not want to risk being the first 2-3 shipfuls as its unlikely to be an easy fix. Swapping with another on the next boat - they will soon run out of cars to swap out and if they still don't know what the issue is when will 100% problem free MG4s be arriving.

Again its interesting Mulans in China and even EU MG4 have not had the same issues

My service manager told me the reduction gearbox should be filled with exactly 0.85 litre oil after draining according to MG guidance they gave to diagnose/fix the problem. When they drained mine it only had 0.7 in it and it was still leaking. Hence refilling is not the answer for my car and why it seems overfill theory is unlikely to be the cause in my case at least. It is not wax.
Even though the manual states 0.9 ?

I just posted the following on the MG Motors Facebook page: “ MG Motor UK I say No to compromise! I collected my new EV4 on 7/10/22 and returned it to the dealer on 10/10/22 due to a serious oil leak. I still don’t have it back. In our MG EV forum nearly 40% of those who responded to a poll have the oil leak. We have no communication from MG, I emailed 3 days ago, no response. Not good enough. Care to comment? https://www.mgevs.com/threads/mg4-oil-leak-poll.7786/

I would hate for any of you to go there and like the post. MG Motors UK Facebook

I can’t seem to post a link direct to the post, but I replied to their post 2 days ago.

Liked and commented mate 👍🏻
I suggest others do the same

My dealer has phoned to postpone my test drive for later today, as all their cars are being checked for the oil leak issue on MG's instructions. So it sounds like MG are doing the right thing.
Latest from dealer today is that they have followed MG's instructions to empty oil and refill (they are convinced the leak is of oil), and test drives have now recommenced immediately. Their demo car suffered from the leak and had done less than 50 miles.

Had reply from Dealer after my email about concerns of leaks etc...His reply is positive

Morning Harry,
I’ve just emailed our regional MG operations manager about this to get his advice.

He has told me MG will be issuing a bulletin to dealers imminently regarding the subject so we should hopefully have more information very soon.

Also has mentioned he’s chased it up this morning and made MG Head Office aware of the feedback.

I’ll keep you in the loop once I have more info!

Imminent sounds promising for update.

How do we know that they haven't?
In the FB link above - well at least one French MG4 affected - good luck trying to get China forums to work

"in france order MG Drained out and refilled oil + changed the BREATHER CAP !"

MG and recall - when you have clickbait reviews stating VW ID3 beater at 10k savings - can see them dragging their feet on this but surely that many oil leaks - has to be a recall of some sort

So you've basically just proven my point. ;)

(You said no EU or China models have had this issue - then posted that at least one in France - which is in the EU last time I checked - has this issue) :)

Only 30 days to ‘easily’ reject the car, ummm

When did you take delivery of yours?

Well i don’t think yet we do know what we are dealing with here yet Jeff, which I hope is what you meant to write,
About a week ago when this started I wrote we should not be calling this thread MG4 reduction gearbox oil leaks, but more MG4 oil leaks, because we have no idea what it was that is leaking, possible things it could be IMHO where of course gearbox oil, which is looking very much the favourite up to now, or battery coolant was another, or maybe something else, well the one that’s being highlighted as being something else, is wax protection that’s sprayed on certain parts, but I don’t believe it is, reasons for that being, nothing really gets that hot to melt that amount of wax if it is that, from the one area, and from the pictures I have seen here, there appears to be some where quite a lot that has come away from somewhere under the rear or the car, plus if it’s protective wax why is it only in this one area on every picture I’ve seen, do other parts of the car not need any protection from the elements while at sea front suspension parts steering gear etc surely they are also open to the elements also, but they are not covered in wax, no until somebody at one of the dealerships or MG headquarters gets the act together and checks with tests what the hell this substance is we can guess for evermore, Im still awaiting for my wife’s car to arrive but if this lot gets into the newspapers which it will, this could do a lot of damage and both on this and other forums I have read of people cancelling their orders because of these issues, there’s a major issue here and the dealers and MG Motors need to get to the bottom of it ASAP otherwise it could do a lot of damage.
Les.
Excellent post Les, well done, I cancelled my order this morning, see my post.
I just don't have the faith others have.

Which dealer are you with, I got the exact same reply, word for word

I have not seen the problem first hand and agreed that some wax's can melt and drip. However after seeing other photographs I would say it is a light oil and probably a synthetic type, so relief valve would make sense on an overfill.
I agree.
Harry - I do like the yellow Triumph Stag as your avatar photo, takes me back a bit.
Do you still have it, or is it long "bi-gone" car now ?.
Worked on more than a few of them in my time, usually for over heating problems !.
Installing a new breather cap that would correct the problem has to be the best out come for both owners / dealers and MG themselves !.
Let's hope it's that easy folks 🤞 .

I only saw the FB post after it was posted after my link.....

Like I say google MG EV forum - this lovely site and the other one are the main forums - FB would be next....but sure there are examples of EU/China issues but just finding the sites which would report on them

”You couldn’t make it update”

My car, which has a definite oil leak, not wax, now has been refilled with oil and a UV dye so they can supposedly see where the leak is coming from. However, it cannot be road tested to see where it is coming from because the latest software update that they did while waiting has bricked the car, it cannot be turned on or driven. They are waiting for a fix for this so they can actually turn on the car and drive it.

In other news, they have 1 showroom car and 1 demo plus another customer car and all 4 have oil leak.

For fecks sake what next
I can see some rejections on the horizon

I don't think it is in my case either as the garage emptied refiled cleaned it down ran out in it and its still leaking but they weren't shore were from
