Car not charging on DC chargers / Fault code P1EB2 Battery Interface Control Module 1 Not Programmed

A word of advice - if you tour car forums while waiting for your car order to be fulfilled you'll come across all sorts of horror stories for any make/model.

Bear in mind most people have a trouble-free experience and forums magnify the negatives because that's when people need help.
I'm always doing this 🫣. You'd think I'd learn - folks don't complain when things are going right. Bit worrying about the dealer responses though. Too busy to take emergencies. Either running it too close to Just in Time or something else 🤔

This cannot be emphasised too much. The MG4 has sold extremely well and the cars are all over the place. Most people are getting on just fine. If even 10% of owners were having significant problems it would be News.

But as soon as someone has a problem, what do they do? They come here and tell us all about it in the hope of finding help (which they often do). Of course it starts to seem as if the cars are poison!

Remember Bowfer's loss of power problem (SE SR issue only). It affected several people. More than one car was rejected as a result. Others had the problem solved by a software update that came later, but we still have one or two people who say it has not been solved for them. Bowfer was all over the forum predicting that the fault was likely to affect all SE SR cars, and that we'd all be clamouring to reject them when it happened. Nope. Significant issue for those people who experienced it, but it was only ever penny numbers.

It is true that dealers were very busy in the run up to xmas, due to MG's sales successes and challenges with staffing levels (some smaller dealerships have been deliberately closed). Pressures have eased a bit since.

MG are not known for great service although this is more down to MG UK's policies (or SAIC?) than local dealers.

There are good and bad dealers out there, as with any make. MG need to do better in this area, for sure.

From what I think I've read so far there seems to be three potential fault generation areas ? Phase 1 3 phase charge ports on the AC, Faulty sensor in the battery pack registering 86° on a cell and s/w upgrade. Is that right ?

The AC charging fault seems well characterised and is being repaired with a hardware fix.

The DC charging issue(s) are as yet less well characterised. We have a couple of reports of cars telling the charger that their battery is at 86°C and having the charger figuratively run away screaming, and we have this P1EB2 fault. We don't know whether that's the same thing, or two different faults, as far as I know.

How would I know if my issue is linked to this P1EB2 code? Is it possible for me to see this error code without any specialist soft/hardware?

Hello all, new member here - please go gently with me.

I have an MG4 SE LR that I got last June. It had its first 15K service on Friday 3rd of Feb where they did whatever they normally do in a service, and a software update. Normally I charge it at home, but I was away with work last week and on Wednesday needed to use a rapid charger - and had no luck. I spent 3 hours driving around Leeds trying all manner of chargers with no luck before giving up and trying a 7kWh Pod Point charger near my hotel which worked. I have subsequently established that the car will not connect to/charge at any DC charger. AC is fine, but put a DC charger anywhere near it and nothing happens.

I sent it back into the dealership in Peterborough who have had it for the last two days. They told me that they have tested it and it is working - however I tried three chargers on my way home and none of them would connect.

Has anyone else experienced this? Or can anyone direct me to a thread where this is being discussed? Concerningly the garage told me this afternoon that they have had another MG4 have identical issues (including it working fine when they tested it). Is it easy to fix? I do a lot of milage so DC charging is pretty essential.

Many thanks

Rich
I bought my ZS Trophy EV on 14th Feb 2024. The car is a 2022 model with 14k miles on it. Before purchase the car has had its 15k service and was pdi'd. However, like you Rich I discovered 3 days after purchase that the vehicle will not DC rapid charge.
I've got the car booked in (but they can't do it until 7th March) I can manage for the time being....just.

I have emailed MG to ask if this is a known software fault. And, what they are doing about it. But I haven't received a reply, yet.

Currently, the car is not fit for purpose, and not as described. Hopefully they will solve this issue very soon for me and anyone else. If not, then I'll be rejecting the vehicle using UK Consumer Protection legislation.

Hi Rick,

Hopefully they will get it sorted for you, I got called by my dealership yesterday and they have said that MG have released another software update and that they have done it on someone else with the same issue as us and it seems to have worked. Mine is booked in for Wednesday. I will be testing it on the way home so I will let you know if it has sorted it.

Donald’s in Peterborough seems to have a wait of less than a week to get cars booked in every time I have contacted them so for anyone reasonably local that might be a better option than these garages with long lead times.

Afternoon all, purchased a 3 phase cable so I can st least try 22kw chargers whilst I wait for vehicle to go into dealership to sort out the error code.
Just been driving around fo 90 mins looking for working chargers no luck at all, to teat to make sure it works as a long journey planned early next week.Met a few people at the charging bays at local golf course trying to get any of the three chargers to work but to no avail. The local Morrisons has a 22kw charger, it was busy yesterday, so went today, out of order. Is it any wonder people get range anxiety. This fault is becoming a complete nuisance.

Hi, mine has the 86°C problem (phase 1 trophy LR) sincle Sept / Oct last year, but took many visits to the dealer to discover it.
Current situation is: waited 5 weeks for new temp sensor to arrive,
Went in on Thursday to be repaired, just been to see what’s going on ( they never answer the phones, or keep you informed)
Need an additional part “tube” ‘whatever that is’ but it’s not listed in the parts manual!!
Back ordered from China, ETA 16 weeks.
Car currently on ramp with whole battery removed, which means they cannot use that bay until it’s fixed.
Now waiting for MG assist to turn up with a courtesy car for the duration.
Right at this moment, I wish I’d never heard of MG.

Just an update on the above.
Have now got a MG4 LR hire car supplied to me.
Spoke to the manager at the dealership, and he gave a more thorough explanation.
They dropped the battery out to fit the sensor and discovered one of the Coolant lines for the battery had a leak.
this is the part that will take 16-18 weeks to obtain and is unrelated to the temp sensor I guess.
As this is a factory sealed assembly, I wonder if that has been spotted before?

Anyway, I now have another MG4, so life goes on.

My MG4 Trophy had its 1st service last Thursday. This included a software update. The first time I needed to charge the car following this was on a trip back from Gloucester where I stopped at Reading services which has Gridserve chargers. I paid and connected. I noticed only the two right side of the four charging point lights on the car lit up, normally all four are purple. The Gridserve charger screen said connecting to car then said charging stopped and showed an error, unable to connect to car. The car also showed an error saying take to dealer.

I checked to make sure the car was set up correctly to receive a charge which it was. I tried three other chargers and had the same problem. I called my MG service centre, they couldn't offer any help or explanation, useless. Eventually called MG Assist who called the AA. AA man ran a diagnostic check, couldn't find anything. Asked me if I'd had a recent software upgrade and when I said I had, he said that's your problem. He disconnected/reconnected 12v battery, no difference, so towed me home. I connected to my 3 phase Zappi overnight just in case and this morning 100% fully charged??? Has anyone had a similar experience, or can offer any suggestions as to what might have been the problem?

Yes, your not alone, it appears to be an update done whilst in for service has caused the issue.

Speak to MG & they should be able to help

Unless the D/C charger you used was faulty, then because it charged at home address, from your A/C wall box, then its isolated too a D/C charging problem.
Likely caused by the recent software update.

Thanks very much I'll speak with the dealer. Interestingly when I spoke to service centre about the charging problem I also mentioned since the service I was getting a warning from the rear nearside tyre pressure gauge that it was under inflated despite being at 2.6 bar. I was told they had received lots of notifications of this and MG had told them to inflate all tyres in future to 40 PSI to overide the sensor!

Yep, that sounds like an MG 'solution'

You do not need to go to 40, just a bit higher. I had this during the winter when cold tyres give a lower pressure reading but once I added some air it all went away after a few miles.
