Ok, am booked in for Wed and Thu next week.

They want the car for two days to run tests and analyse the results with MG's technical centre.

They believe it is a problem with the software updates, so they are going to step through and retest to see if this is a one off or something that needs an additional fix.

MG's view is it is most likely a problem with the updates applying cleanly, so they are confident of a solution.

I am actually reassured that they want to take two days to go over it thoroughly.
Fingers crossed they get a resolution for you.

Have you had any software updates recently that may have caused it? I've had my car since June 2022 with no updates applied yet mine suddenly stopped last week. Unless there's a bug in whatever version it's running. Very likely if the infotainment is anything to go by!

They could do with implementing a software checksum test capability on all their modules on every power on. Then they wouldn't release the vehicles in a bad state after upgrades.

It would save them and us a heap of time and money and I'm surprised it's not in there already.

Actually, thinking about it, they may actually be referring not to the code, but perhaps some incompatibility in the saved configuration data between module versions or between different modules. I suspect full data resets are not possible, or bad for other reasons.

The AC charging stopped working with no updates to the car after about 9 months of ownership.

I've had a ton of updates since to try to fix the problem along with a new CCU fitted.

Dealer just contacted me to say vehicle is ready for collection. They fully charged it in a 7kW AC charger, serviced vehicle and then finally managed to update vehicle after contacting MG technical. Unfortunately they haven't tested the DC charging. They told me if the update hasn't rectified the issue it will need a new CCU fitted. I'll pick it up in the morning, take it for a spin on the motorway and then try to fast DC charge with fingers crossed.

Took vehicle up motorway In sports mode with all heaters on trying to use up energy to try DC charge. Epic fail, unable to connect. Then tried type 2 cable , luckily this still works. Will contact dealer on Monday looks like a new CCU unit needed.

Dealer have called me (albeit on the same day I dropped it off but wasn't around to pick it up) and car is ready to be collected, in the same state exactly as how I dropped it off.

They've done nothing to it at all. Ordered a new handle due to the keyless entry button not working, so waiting for that to arrive & be painted & ready to be fitted before they'll apply software updates as a first fix attempt. Fingers crossed for progress in a couple of weeks, but I'm 99.9% sure it'll need a new CCU in due course.

I can tell you one thing, been horrible driving the diesel work van for 3-4 days. I forgot how clutches work properly after over 3 years of automatic cars...

Ok, Foxy is fixed and working again! Actually, she was already fixed last time, the problem I had turned out to be a configuration issue.

I've never used a schedule on the car and always set a schedule on my car charger. For some reason - possibly due to the defaults? - when the car had its software updates a night-time only schedule was set on the car. This meant that when I got back from the garage and tested it on my wallbox and granny charger, it would not charge. All my subsequent tests were also in the daytime as it happened.

I feel a bit of a fool to have forgotten that this functionality existed but I never go into that settings area on the charge screen, so I did not check it - when it was mentioned I discounted it because I never set a schedule on the car. If only I had tried an overnight charge, I would have discovered this earlier, but I didn't do that because the car wasn't charging when I was testing it!

Anyway, all is well that ends well, I can add Foxy to the list of cars that have the AC charging problem properly fixed by the new CCU and the associated software updates.

Something for other people to check though - when you get your car upgraded/updated, is there a charge schedule set on the car that you did not expect to be there.

Great news tsedge!!
I completely understand that it makes sense to think the settings would be the same when you got your car back. I had a similar problem with mine. They'd set the battery heating to be on which explained why my mi/kWh was pants!! 😂😂
Glad she's back & you can start enjoying her again!!

Excellent. Good to hear it's been resolved. Was it just charging software updated or have other modules been done as part of it?

After installing the CCU they updated a ton of modules across the car, not just charging and upgraded me to R46 infotainment software. However, that was because I also complained about the eSOS phone failing, bad ACC behaviour and phantom emergency braking. So, you wouldn't necessarily get all of these updates just for a charging issue.

A bit off topic, but is the eSOS fixed? Mine is due in for the 4th time for this in April.

I have chanced upon this thread whilst looking for some answers and hoping for some help.

2 days ago I went to unplug my car to leave for work and the Zappi screen was completely blank. I checked my app and after charging for 90 minutes, the MCB in the consumer unit must have tripped and so charging stopped. I reset the MCB and the screen came back on. I plugged the car in as normal the next night to charge with IO and I happened to wake at 4am and thought I'd check it. The myenergi app was showing charging but no charge was occurring. I went down to the car and both the Zappi and my car were flashing green. I reset the Zappi, the car etc, but no luck. When I changed it to fast mode, the zappi checked the RCD and then proceeded to charging but it only went from 0 - 0.2kW for 1 second and then it cut out again. I tried manually boosting it and the same thing happened. Assuming it was the Zappi at fault, last night I used the MG granny cable and had exactly the same outcome. So today I used a friend's Zappi and 2 different cables and they were the same as well. My friend wondered if it was the AC charger in the car that was at fault as it will charge ok at super chargers. And I chanced upon this thread.

I have a 72 plate Trophy, I use a Zappi charger on IO tariff. It was serviced at 15K miles and was last updated in December 2023 I think when it went in for some repairs.

My questions are:
1. Can this problem be fixed with a software update?

2. Or is this likely to need a new CCU? If so what is the timescale for this to be ordered, fitted and fixed

3. Will MG provide a courtesy car as I'm assuming it's under warranty, a known fault as I am a self-employed sole parent in a one car household and I need my car to get to work, school etc and there are no reliable DC chargers near us, nor do I have the hours or finances to use them daily (I do 550-600 miles per week hence the switch to an EV)

4. Is there anything particular I should state when I call them tomorrow about it

Thanks

1. Maybe
2. More than likely - Up to 2 months depending on availability of spares
3. Insist on it (but don't be too hopeful on a replacement EV). Yes under warranty
4. Check a DC charger to see if it charges (Probably will) and repeat above stated in #1, you may have to wait to get the car into the dealer but if they state they have fixed it with software or whatever get them to prove it!
5. Good Luck

All good advice, I would just add;
  • Hopefully it is quicker now that CCU replacement batches have come into the UK and MG is more familiar with the issue.
  • Gather your test evidence, write it down and hand it to your dealer so you don't waste time with them thinking it is user error.
  • Be prepared for two visits: one to try software updates first and then another if a new CCU is needed.
  • Use a dealer that will give you a courtesy car, just in case they need to keep it in for any reason.

None of us can tell you if you need a new CCU or not but we can say most people have needed the hardware fix.

3. Will MG provide a courtesy car

I see you are in Derbyshire. I've used MG Stoneacre in Derby and they've given me a courtesy car when asked without any problem. If you use your own insurance it's free or about £15/day if you use their insurance. And no, I didn't buy my MG4 from them.

The car went in for its first service on Wednesday and I’m glad to say there were no issues on that front. Before I had booked it in for the service, I explained to the dealer about the charge not stopping when set to 80%, as this has been happening since the new CCU was fitted. So, on the day of the service, the technician explained to me that he had performed seven software updates to address the problem.

I’m happy to say after testing it at home on the Zappi and yesterday on a 50kW rapid charger, the car will now limit the charge to 80% if I set it to that amount.
