Car won't charge

Check if the cable is locked in when you lock the car, if not then it may not be getting the signal from the plug.
Also check the connections are clear of debris or dirt, especially the smaller ones.
I use this occasionally to keep mine clean.

Thank you. I did clean and used both the cables as did the AA and using their own cables -one must assume the dealership did as well? All the previous suggestions have been helpful including disconnecting the 12v battery cable and resetting(AA), checking it wasn’t on scheduled charging, (AA) testing CCU and ODU, ( dealer) trying rapid charging, super rapid charging and granny option,

I also have an issue with charging MG4 on home charger. I'm new to having and using electric car and charging, but I think this exact issue with charging is not my fault.

Here are some bulletpoints of what is happening and what I've tried:
  • The screen in car shows soemething like "check the cable" in the charging section in the infotaiment system.

  • I've had the car for about 20 days, and have charged 3 times at home before it stopped working.

  • I used the "Stop charging" from the app to stop the 3rd time I charged (last time it worked).

  • I have turned off scheduled charging.

  • I tried a public rapid charger, and that worked (when using both charger ports on the car)

  • I've contacted the MG dealer, and they had a look at it. They found something like a "charge lock error" or something and deleted it, and told me to contact them again if the issue re-occurred, which it did immediately. It don't seem they understood the issue, and that it was a new problem for them.

So now I'm looking for a fix online since the MG dealer didn't fix it, however I will contact them again if I don't find the solution from someone who knows more about this exact issue.

I will also investigate if it could be my home-charger being the problem, it did work without problems 3 times in a row, but it is giving 2,3 kW which is quite low and I'm not sure if that could be a problem, that for some reason only happened on the fourth charging attempt.

Please tell us what make your home EVSE (aka charger) is and whether it has a tethered cable attached to it or you have a separate cable.

When you plug in the cable do the colour of the port lights change?

Some have had problems with the plug tilting down when in the port. Can you get someone to hold it in firmly whilst you start the charge?

I'm using a "Charlie 1" charger, which is a very simple charger, and I'm using the separate Type 2 cable that came with the car.

The lights on the charger itself changes correctly. It always show 1 constant green light when "idle", and when ready for charging, it adds a second blue light.

When I plug the cable in both the charger and the car, it adds the second blue light, which means the charger is ready to charge.

The colors of the port lights will show a constant white before the cable is plugged in, and then a constant blue light after cable is plugged in (but it never changes to green).

What also happens sometimes is that it shows the constant blue light when cable is plugged in, and then suddenly all lights goes off (while the cable is untouched and still connected).

Thanks, for the input and suggestion, I will try holding the cable in whilst starting the charge, however it seems to fit well, and I can hear that it locks in place.

I also think I should try a public non-rapid charger (Type-2), to further investigate if it is a problem with my home charger.

Because "Stop Charging" in the app seems to be the last time it worked maybe the app is at fault.
If you haven't done so already, try starting a charge from the app after plugging in and locking the car.
The next thing I would try, if that doesn't work, is to delete and download the app again.

I tried to delete the app and unbind it, rebind it to the car, and then use the "Start Charging" button, but it unfortunately still gives the "Failed" message.

I do however think i had a breakthrough, and found out that it is my charger (Charlie 1) that causes the issue. I do not know what the problem is exactly, but I used a public Type-2 charger with my cable, and that worked!

Thanks for all the helpful input and troubleshooting suggestions. I’ll post any updates if it turns out the charger isn’t the issue. I will now contact my electrician company to find a permanent fix.

Every so often I have problems getting the car to start charging. Usually it eventually plays ball but today I have tried numerous times in the app and in the car. It just keep coming up with a message "failed".

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm wondering if it could be when it's hot.
Had this problem with my 2022 MG4 Trophy last night. It kept saying charger plugged in, check connection. This morning it connected quickly first time. Only issue is it will cost 29.71p per kw instead of 6.7p (Eon Next).
When I first got the car in July it did the same thing. Bugden MG Shrewsbury fixed the charge port under guarantee.
The charging sequence I used is:
Unlock car and charge flap. Plug cable into my Podpoint Solo 3, plug other end into car.
Green light, charging started. Car locked itself.
Any thoughts anyone please?

I'm pretty much the same sequence, except I lock the car myself (so I can watch that the green lights stay on). Note: I've never had any charging issues - I just like to be sure that charging has started and continues.

As yours is an early LR with 3 phase charging it sounds like it could be CCU failure - is that what they replaced earlier?

I find on my ZS EV you have to be really sure to push it firmly home (Oooh matron). If ity goes in at an angle the blue lights come on but Ohmr Pro shows it as unplugged

I start charging manually during the day time because I'm trying to use solar, rather than overnight using a Zappi wallbox. I find sometimes I plug in and hear the locking pin deploy immediately and then when I change the Zappi to charging mode I hear the locking pin unlock. Usually it's the other way round i.e. the locking pin only deploys when I start charging on the Zappi. In the case of the former, I then get in the car and on the charging screen choose lock and then charge and it's all good. Alternately I found recently that locking the car deployed the locking pin and the charge started (so no need to get in and start manually). Sorry not necessarily helpful for those charging overnight, but I think the locking pin is key to whether it's ready to charge or not. Feel free to tell me if I've got it wrong!

I've just bought a 23 plate, SE and also having charging issues. Started with a granny charger, whilst waiting for a home charger and worked a little but got worse. Changed sockets and improved but only for a day before only connecting and charging for about 30 seconds. Got a Ohme Home Pro installed yesterday and worked a treat in the installer's car. Tried mine and same issue. Charge for a 30 seconds and then stop. No scheduling assigned. Has been able to charge on DC rapid charging, but obviously that is unsustainable and not good. Contacted dealer (not MG) and awaiting response as only bought on 9th November. It's been really frustrating.

If you have the long range SE without the rear wiper it most likely is CCU failure - there is a very long thread about it on this site.

I have a problem with DC charging sometimes. I find that if I lock the car with the charging flap open, give it 30 seconds and then plug it, it usually works.

I don't have any problems with granny charging, I just plugs it in and off it goes.

I don't have AC charging available so couldn't comment on anything specifically other than, the app is a waste of time. I almost always use the infotainment system to start and stop the charging.

Could you provide as much information as possible e.g. exact steps taken and exact makes and models of chargers etc.

Thanks, having read this forum it's what I suspect. It's not LR but it was just prior to the update: July 2023. It's going back to the dealer I bought it from on Monday for a diagnostic.
