Car won't lock.

Yesterday I visited friends (in the pouring rain) and we met at an Arboretum (now in light rain). After changing into our “wet” gear, I tried to lock (and shut down) the car. It just went BEEP and wouldn’t shut down, lights still on radio still playing etc.. This normally means a door is open, So I went round opened and shut all the doors & boot, I still couldn’t shut down and lock the car. Still it went beep. So I drove the car round the car park, parked up and tried again, with the same result. At this point we’ve all got wet. I couldn’t leave the car still open and “running” in the car park, so we all drove to our friends house (which isn’t in the middle of nowhere) with the idea of calling the AA. Lo and behold, it shut down and has been fine since (in the little time we’ve used it).

Has anyone else had this? It could have been worse if I had had a low battery!

No doubt someone will, be along soon. To give you a possible answer. My guess it's one of those unexplained things that just happen, and will never happen again. Not just MGs, other manufacturers too.

Bonnet switch? Actually any of the door switches being a bit off/defect?
Haven't had it myself, purely based on that it "resolved itself"

Did you by any chance have the second key with you?

Good afternoon @Newby, welcome to the forum, after changing into your wet gear, you hadn't accidentally left your key in the car had you?

I had this yesterday in the rain and once before last year in the dry. In both cases the door button beeped but the keyfob button locked the car without complaint. As far as I remember if you leave a door open the car will beep but still lock. It may be this beep was to tell it cannot lock.

I'm with Clive. When this happened to me it was because I had left the other key in the car. I remember a friend telling me about a carry-on they had when their car refused to lock, and it turned out the spare key was in the wife's coat pocket and she'd left the coat on the parcel shelf.
