Charging 10%-100% every 3-6 months

How many kWh are likely to be outside the "cheap" period?

If you start at 10% then that is ~6.1kWh. 5 hours at 6.5kW will give 32.5kWh, making a total charge of ~38.6kWh. So you'd need another, say, 24kWh (including balancing) at the higher rate. Multiply that by your (higher rate - cheaper rate) then divide by 0.9 (with the assumption that charging efficiency is 90%) and you'll have your extra cost.

That's what I decided, I'd just like to know the correct process now though, it's bugging me

The harder thing to work out is how long it will take, the app reckons if I start now it will be finished around 4am, does that include balancing though ?

Probably not, as it's merely an estimate based on the current rate of charge. When balancing the state of charge is already at "100%" and the finish time keeps updating as the current time, until the balancing actually finishes (which may take 10 minutes to an hour, depending on what the BMS works out what it needs).

Don't worry if balancing takes an hour ... the cost is based on capacity (kWh) not how fast it is delivered (kW). An average of, say, 100W charge rate whilst balancing for an hour is only 100Wh, or 0.1kWh.

I've done mine twice. Down to under 10% in the evening, timed deliberately for the day before a day when I knew I wouldn't need the car. Plugged in to granny charger and left. Takes about 26 hours. Plug didn't even get warm.

But then I don't have a variable tariff, so it doesn't make any difference to me. If I had a wall box I'd just make sure that the time, which would be about eight hours, took in the entire cheap-rate period for that day. In the grand scheme of thing, it's pocket change.

That's spooky, I always say if you hear or read a word you haven't heard/read before, you'll hear/read it again soon afterwards. And you've said "assuage" which was an answer in today's crossword I did. Had to cheat on that one though, I'd never heard of of it. ?

Also what tariff are you on? If intelligent octopus just plug in as early as possible and request 100% charge by say 9am and if it decides needs to be charged out of normal overnight cheap hours I think all the units will be at cheap rate to achieve what supply you asked for

I don't have a compatible charger for IO unfortunately

I think there are two questions. One is whether it's OK to interrupt the charge in the middle without driving the car (say to avoid peak-rate charges, or if you're on one of those Blink chargers that cuts the power after 4 hours and you have to go back and start it again), and the other is whether it's OK to drive the car in the middle of the charge, so long as you don't put it on a DC charger.

I suspect the first may be OK but I don't think the second will meet the requirements. Though what do I know?

Apologies in advance because I know this has been discussed before.

I'm currently running my SOC to around 10% so I can do the 10% - 100% charge and balance the battery, however I have an off peak tariff (5 hours) and don't think my car will get to 100% in that window.

The manual states this should be done every 3-6 months.

Is it ok to let it charge to whatever % it gets to in my charging window and then finish it off to 100% the next night ?

Otherwise I will be paying the higher electric rate getting it to 100% in one night.

The reason for the charge is so the BMS can tell the scope of the battery pack, so I would charge in one go, it's only every 6 months so it won't break the bank.
