Yep, easy to do, must admit I feel a bit guilty about our overseas trip, but that's no reason not to buy an EV.

It does sound a bit hypocritical, but it's an apple and orange thing, buying an EV, (if you can afford it, is no hardship, but missing out on a bucket list holiday is something else.

You do what you can.
And as already said, if you think you can save the planet, you have serious mental problems. Maybe make it a little less unpleasant for coming generations, is all you can hope for.

To be honest saving the planet wasnt the primary reason. I bought EV(s) because I like the way they drive, the convenience of recharging at home and the very cheap running costs. I was spoiled 10 years ago when working in USA I was given a Tesla Model X as my company car, I had to do regular trips from New York to Pittsburgh and within 5 miles I knew I wouldn't be driving ICE much longer. When I returned home I sold my 4.4 TDV8 Range Rover and bought a BMW i3, opposite ends of the green scale. I feared I would miss the Range Rover but within a couple of days I knew I would never go back to ICE. That is still my stance today, I still have the i3, we bought an MG5 Trophy in 2023 and already planning its replacement next year.

We change the thinking, one household at a time, about the best we can do really.
Fortunately, I don't have flying to another part of the world on my bucket list, seeing as much of Australia in the time I have left is my driving ambition (no pun intended there)

You could always use Eurostar and have an adventure driving through Europe and beyond.

The last time I flew was in September 2002 (to the USA, for a train ride from Chicago to Denver).

Flying is now relatively greener, though there is more of it! And it will get greener. But whether green enough is currently debatable. I'm not in favour of stopping people flying. Give everyone an annual carbon credit I say, and then they can use it or sell it as they see fit.

I think Sleeper trains are the answer.

Go to sleep on one side of the continent and wake up on the other. Went from Brussels to Wien that way.

The bottlenecks are:
1. There aren't enough of the trains as they are quite specialist carriages.
2. Often track work is done overnight so they can't secure the routes, or can't secure them until relatively late, which isn't great for planning a trip in advance.

Do what you can, I say. But frankly, even if you told me that EVs were killing the planet and everyone should go back to petrol for the sake of the environment, you'd have to prise my MG4 out of my cold dead hands.

Not us. I do think getting an EV is a good thing for the planet and I'm very happy we've replaced both our ICE VWs with MG4s.

However, living in Australia it's very impractical to not fly to get to Europe for a holiday. You really need to take the plane.

That being said, once we get there, we take trains everywhere we're staying.

Spending hours in airports is not our idea of fun. Far nicer getting the fast trains around. So much more relaxing.

Maybe they'll get this ammonia to hydrogen conversion down to a light and small package that they can feed it into the jet engines and just produce water as steam that will improve the thrust. The fuel tanks can be replaced with light weight graphene reinforced polycarbonate that doubles as the wing outer skin and the baffles in the tank double as the wing structure ribs.
That way, they can both offset the weight difference between aviation kero and ammonia while increasing the tank capacity ..... eliminate the fire risk and just worry about the ammonia killing who ever in the case of a spill or crash .... the ammonia is an energy carries and the remains after the hydrogen is again extracted, is nitrogen, the most abundant gas in our air and great for putting out fires and as a plant growth stimulant .... https://www.csiro.au/en/research/environmental-impacts/fuels/hydrogen/ammonia-and-reaching-net-zero

The down side, it does have a short life cycle in the atmosphere, but unfortunately it converts to N2O (nitrous oxide) which is 275 times worse than CO2 as a greenhouse gas ....
