help! Wife has locked key in boot!

The wife has taken my car on a trip to London and has conspired to lock the Mg5 key in the boot. Any advice, ad I’m about 4 hours away. It is ridiculous that this is even possible

FWIW, and it's no consolation to you or your wife, but I've just been out and thrown my keys in the boot with driver's window down just in case. Pressed external door handle button, car beeped and wouldn't lock.

Hope you get it sorted and maybe a trip to dealer when you've got over the grief and hassle.

Call the MG Assistance ( which is the AA ) they maybe able to get into the car without too much trouble !.
Common problem for them to sort.
I would strongly suggest you get a couple of spare emergency key blade cut and put them in your wallet or wife’s purse.
Or carefully conceal one somewhere externally on the car.

At a guess. The key battery is low and not being detected in the boot, or signal is obscured (bottom of a handbag full of stuff that interferes with signal)

I've also tested locking my keys in by locking the car door with them inside. Opening the boot, locking the main doors, then placing them key in the boot and shutting it. All tests resulted in the horn sounding and the vehicle not locking (boot released with the button). All whilst at home with a spare key in a faraday box in case of epic fail.

I did this with my old Audi A2 company motor on the day I was given it. I opened the boot with the remote control boot release, it only unlocks the boot. I dropped the key without realising and shut the boot. Hey presto keys locked in boot. Luckily it being at the office they had the spare.
I also managed to lock my Seat keys in the car by leaving them in my bag which got chucked in the back seat and the doors all locked when I closed the passenger door.
I learned my lesson in both cases. Never trust technology.

Thought I'd better clarify I was loading my stuff into the boot when I dropped the key. I wasn't just being a wally.

Another member @jag john has done the same with both a MG HS PHEV and a Jag e pace.
Approached the car from the rear, car detects the key is close and allows the boot / hatch back to be opened without opening the rest of the car.
You open the boot ( to put in your shopping etc ) and you put the keys down on the boot floor carpet.
The car then permits you to close the boot ( keys inside ) and it automatically re-locks the boot only, because the rest of the car is already locked.
Bingo - Your locked out !.
Options - Ring and have the spare brought over, ring the recovery people and hope they can get in, have a spare key blade made and conceal, or always open and close the car fully with the fob.
Oh ........... If you have a model with the ISmart App, you can use that to open the car.
But then your realise the phone is on charge in the car, or in the pocket of your jacket, that is on the back seat !.
Just because it's been one of them days ?‍ .

It's actually very easy to do, if the car is locked and you use boot only unlock, drop the keys in the boot then shut it everything locks and won't open again

When l had the mk1 5, it would not lock with keys in it, but as suggested call MG assistant

Because of things like this, I keep my key clipped to my belt. I'm guessing a handbag will have somewhere the key can be attached.

When my wife did that, the boot wouldn't stay shut. It seemed to know the key was there and wouldn't let the boot actually close at all. It kept bouncing back open

Just tried it today. Unlocked the boot with the middle button, opened & closed it. The boot locked itself without any further intervention. 22 plate MG5 Excite.

Not a good design imo.

The boot should open as the keys at next to it regardless of being in the boot, my MG4 EV does this

This is really easy to do if the boot is unlocked with the boot unlock button on the key fob.

Like others have suggested you can phone MG Assistance and they will come and break into the car for you. You have to agree to a disclaimer about damage because they don't guarantee being able to get in without damaging the car.

If your wife is going to be in London for a while you could mail her the spare! When I did this I got a taxi to bring the spare to me, pricey but I wasn't willing to risk the damage MG Assistance felt might occur when they gain access to the car.

Where did you get this done? I tried Timpson and a small independent and both said they didn’t have the right bits to make a spare.

Currently returning to the car after a 200 mile round trip to collect a spare! AA were a bit useless and couldn’t get into the car.
