In praise of my XPower

I was looking at 3 used cars.

  1. Polestar 2 LR Performance. I had one as a hire car I quite liked it but it was a big car. The other thing that I did not like was that they fit the hardware but charge big fees to turn on the options.
  2. BYD Seal Performance, which seemed quite good but I really could not justify the extra cash.
  3. The Xpower, which I now have and am quite happy with the choice.

I’ve clocked over 30 000 km in my X power now and apart from the vibe ( that’s now fixed ) I’ve had trouble free driving. I get in it, drive, charge, rinse and repeat..

But would I buy another MG? .. NO

Even to the point of the new IM5 performance looks like a good car but I don't think the premium MG brand will be premium with the absolute terrible customer service MG offer ..

If I'm paying a premium I want a premium service ..

The main reason is their customer service has been terrible at best.
MG Australia is non existent in terms of support ..

Service centres /dealers are massive hit and miss. this revolves around being a lot of the centres are paired with other car makes so there are hardly any dedicated MG dealers..

straight up there are better brands out there that better deserve my money ..

I'm looking at either keeping the X power till it dies and buying the Icaur V23 or selling the xpower and buying the new 2025 Xpeng P7 ( if it comes to Aus ).

Same here - car does everything we need and more but the attitude of MG UK means out of principle, we won't buy another MG product.

They also lost the sale of a Cyberster as well as a close family member was all set to order one until he'd heard about my experiences (and that of many on here).

Love my Xpower, only had it since February but it's been fault free. Defintely consider MG for my next replacement car in around 5 years time. Can't beat the performance and driving quality for the money. The IM5 performance looks fantastic, can't wait to see its equivalent in 5 years time.

In general, people seem to really like the car but aren't too impressed with the dealers. I haven't had any interactions with the dealers yet, apart from the one I bought the car from so I can't really judge. They're all efficient when it comes to selling...

Car ticks every box for us as our everyday family wagon and is exceptional value for money given the performance on offer.

Dealer, on the whole has been reasonable (been back there way too many times but that's down mainly to issues with the car which isn't their fault), but at the end of the day they have to do what MG UK instruct them, so our vibration issue went from full agreement from them that it was an unreasonable fault, to towing the corporate line that it was just a 'characteristic', in the space of 4 months.

What really did it for me though was the condescending, patronising responses I received from MG UK customer service team regarding the vibration issue which were absolutely unacceptable (my messages to them were both factual and polite). I was not alone in receiving such responses. For this reason alone, they have lost my custom going forward.

I would advise against MG to anyone and my experience really hasn’t been that bad ..

UK owners have had it way worse .

I find the lack of customer support for MG Australia disgraceful.

Its almost like you buy a budget car you get a budget service..

The one dealership dedicated to just MG ( that helped me alot with updates and my vibe fix ) , MG closed it .. WTF!

I dont think i want to buy a premium car like the IM5 with a budget service department or customer service ..

If they want to chase BMW or Mercedes with the IM5 they NEED to provide decent customer service and service in general ..

Like the vibe fix MG should have just fixed it; no questions, no BS, across the world ..

That would have shown customers there is a problem we know it's there, we will fix it no questions. when i come to buy my next car MG did the right thing repeat business ..

While it might sound rude but the people who are like " yeah its there but its not to bad " are the problem because this just incentivizes MG we can sit on our hands and do nothing !!

Any company will try to dodge spending money on problems if people accept it ..

I would probably have another MG but i would never have another Tesla, if you want a company that is up it’s own arse then good luck dealing with them.
Two people I know fairly well (one in UK, one in Germany) have had lots of issues with their cars, one an Ioniq 5 and the other a Cupra Born, far too many software/sensor issues. They are adamant that they won't be buying any Hyundai or VW group car again after their experiences and they paid a lot more for their cars than I did and I've had no issues with mine so far.

Like I said other than the vibe and the fix everything else has been nit picking problems and I can list a few .

Infotainment system sometimes glitches and needs a reset

I’ve had a clunk once or twice and a warning light saying unable to select a gear after charging been fine for a while now no RT seen it again

These issues are down to price.

The autonomous braking works when it feels like it

LKA is a joke at best .

The software issues are down to price and frankly I paid 55k aud not 90k to 200k for a EV if I had spent more money on a non Chinese branded EV and it had some of these sub par systems or the lack there of what the X power should have I’d be pissed..

Still rings true today your fancy systems are only as good as the people/ company designing them

But for a 55k rocket that I drive charge rinse repeat, have a odd silly price oriented issue the X power has been decent

I'm pretty sure, other manufacturers have the same problems as MG. But we obviously don't here/know about them.
Coz we've got an MG and are on an MG forum. Not had any dealings with an MG dealer yet (1st service on 15th Sept) apart from the initial purchase, because my,
X Power has been faultless. Obviously some folk on here, have had problems, and some dealers and definitely MG UK seem to be, crap, which is not acceptable.

I've got lots of friends & work colleagues with EVs across several different brands and they have all had some sort of issue (mainly software related) so definitely not just an SAIC problem.

For me, had it just been the odd warranty & software issue, I would still consider one of their products in the future. For me it is the vibration issue and how it has been handled that has ensured I will spend our money elsewhere in the future (appreciate the few lucky owners who don't have this problem will see things differently though)

Agree. If you are a lucky owner, who's had no problems, me included. I've got an,
X Power with no vibes. You might think what's all the fuss about. I've never thought that. I still feel for those who have the vibe and other problems, it's not nice at all. I've been there with other cars. And i can certainly see why you wouldn't have another MG. As I've said I'm one of the lucky ones. (Touch wood)

You're not 'lucky' at all. A few have been unlucky but the majority have a car functioning as advertised, myself included, that isn't 'luck' at all.

Interesting - do you have figures on number of X-Powers sold vs those with the vibration issue? Genuinely interested to see if there are only a few of us effected.

Speaking to the master technician at my dealer, he informed me that during his X-Power specific training he underwent, all 6 cars they had there had the vibration issue as all the techs on the course queried it. Bad batch?

Think earlier cars had the issue in spades. Later ones, seem clear or very much reduced. Mine was built around March 2024 and seems to be relatively free of the issue - just a barely perceptible tingle starting about 65mph. I don't notice it unless I'm on a particularly smooth bit of road - quite a rarity in my part of the world.

That’s the thing I’m not sure it’s luck more as it’s MG fixing the issue it has ..

That said it’s still flat out disgusting and disgraceful that MG have been( for the lack of a better word ) sh.tting on their customer base who bought there cars first ..

This is exactly why I’m not buying another MG early adopters shouldn’t be penalised by what as far as I’m concerned is a warranty issue ..

So not that I’m pissed that you got a trouble free car ( well to date ) nor do I want to ginx anything but what if a problem arises later and they pull the it’s a characteristic of the the car sorry not our problem??

Like a lot of early customers!!

Maybe me being once bitten twice shy type I’m not willing to risk this BS again ..

To add to my previous comment..

I’m 48 years old the X power is my first ever new ( well newish ex demo) car and I spent 55k which also makes it the most expensive car I’ve ever owned..

With the issue and the fight agreed mine was fixed but still MG AUS customer service is still chat based no phone number and never get back to you and poor dealers .

Would I be stupid to spend 85k aud which is the asking price of the top of the range IM5??

With that type of experience with MG ??

Like I say, lucky or just dropped on a good
un, obviously I am pleased. And if I do get problems at a later date, I'll deal with it then. And hopefully don't get treated Like some of you have. 🙂👍

I’m not really sold on the im5
IMG_2175.webp

Vs the xpeng p7
IMG_2176.webp

There is a aus YouTube guy electric Viking ( basically he just talks everything electric solar house batteries and EVs )

He owns a xpeng g6 ( the suv thingy) he gets constant OTA updates for it and is always raving about how good it is ..

Personally I think the im5 is a bit bland like a copied Tesla model 3!

My plan is to wait till middle of next year if they have confirmed that the X Peng p7 is coming to aus I will trade the X power in for the p7 .

Think the top xpeng p7 will do around 650 700km per charge so decent

If it’s not I’ll stick with my other plan keep the X power and buy the I caur v23
