Just got my license and I want to buy a used MG4 Trophy any advice?

Are you the person I have seen before holding the lorries up so each one has to pass you at 1-2mph quicker causing havoc on the M1?
Driving at that speed on motorways just gives fuel to the anti EV crowd, bad enough the stuff they make up!
without actually backing up some of the nonsense the say.

My advice would be to properly research second hand values and make sure you don't overpay, there are loads out there for sale, so a dealer should be willing to sell at a fair price - note that a fair price means they can cover their costs (servicing, prep, marketing, VAT, overheads, faults, etc...) and still make a profit, so it won't be a trade in price, you are probably talking about £2k above trade in value to make it worth a main dealer selling it to you.

But there are bargains out there.

@redwood98 doesn't indicate how old they are ... or where they are in the UK. (Both are major factors regarding insurance costs - how long ago you passed your test may have less of an impact than we think).
My 22YO daughter passed in December and in January she bought a 2021 Fiat 500e which is group 19. Even being out in rural Staffordshire her first premium was £2k with a black box monitor installed.

That makes quite a difference, my daughter had a learner policy so had a year's no claims when came time to buy her own car. £1K instead of £2K for her first policy, and when the renewal came up, it had more than halved again (plus she could ditch the black box)

There are probably many cars coming off their 2 year PCP contracts at the moment so might be worth looking at auctions or the bulk dealers (e.g., Arnold Clark) as there should be plenty of choice and a good few low mileage examples (mine went back with less than 6k on the clock). I'm pretty sure the warranties carry over to the secondhand owner so you should be covered for a good few years.

Get an Insurance quote from Hastings Direct. They use a telemetry device to track your driving, which is something of a pain, without any NCB (my NCB is on another car) I was able to get insurance well below other quotes.

One thing, switch it to ECO mode the instant you purchase it so that the performance is lowered to nearer an average car.

Having been a class 1 driver lugging loads from uk to Athens for 20 years that is something I would never do. Never use the M1

Congrats on passing your test 😃👍

I think most of my thoughts have been said above but to summarise:-

  • Check you are happy with insurance costs
  • Get the colour you really want
  • make sure all servicing has been done on time (ring MG Assistance and check it still has AA cover - included in service cost)
  • Go for a long test drive and check for wind noise and vibrations at motorway speeds
  • check all tyres are decent and pressures are consistent on test drive at start and finish.
  • make sure the MG app has been disconnected from previous user and request salesman to setup on your phone.
  • check underneath for damage to battery cover and any bulges.
  • Request a health check and MOT if old enough.
  • Personally I’d go for the newest model I could find at the best price as MG seem to have sorted a lot of early problems on later car. My 73 reg had been faultless.
  • Remember they are RWD so fun to drive but take it steady in the wet and snow !!
