The key must be in the car to drive so there must be something special if, as you say, the boot will pop open if the key inside the car. (Edit: I assume you mean it will still pop up when the handle is pressed?)

The tailgate will physically pop back open as soon as it's closed.

Hi, just reading the threads - this happened to me also, putting my bags in the boot - car detected the key in my bag, unlocked boot - put bags in and it locked the boot as I closed it, other doors remained locked - my only option was to use the app to unlock the car, I opened the boot and the alarm went off, found my key and pressed unlock and all was ok again. Its was a close shave, as it was 3am in the morning at a train station, the app saved me

But, it's not the same, surely . The OP had already unlocked the car before she put her handbag with keys in the boot. She didn't lock the car, the car locked itself from an unlocked state.

I wonder if the car would lock if something in the back accidentally pressed the lock button on the key, despite the key being inside the car. But then you'd expect the button on the doorhandle to still allow the car to open, maybe?

I feel like this is one of those things were a few stars have to align, but when they do it's a real pain to sort out.

When I broke my ankle, I had a key safe fitted which was really handy for the care team as there were times when no-one was here but me and I was bedridden.

I left the key safe in place, knowing that it would one day come in handy and it has.

Our youngest has used it to let himself in and I have used it when I went out with Mrs S who took me to a medical appointment and then went on to work. I got the bus home and then realised I'd forgotten to take my house key with me!

But if course, a key safe would only help people in this situation if they were at home.

So...the exact scenario is as follows and I have just managed to replicate it (MG 4 Trophy long range, 23 REG)

1) Unlock the car and start it up (press the pedal or something, pretend you are taking it for a drive)
2) put it in parked position as you would at the end of the drive
3) get out of the car (with the key) but DONT LOCK the car
4) the lights remain on for some time and the mirrors are unfolded
5) after a while the lights turn off, mirrors are still unfolded and car remains unlocked despite no key inside
6) go to the car - it is unlocked so dont try to unlock it again, open the boot and put a key inside a handbag, any other bag in it and close the boot (if it matters - on the right side and close to the boot door)
7) after a few seconds the car locks itself

Is this the expected behaviour? Would be interesting if anyone here can replicate it with their car?

@flawia, how long did you wait before the DRLs went out? With my Trophy the rear lights go out after a little while but the DRLs stay on for at least 12 minutes. The only time I can get all the lights out is to lock the car, unlock it and open/close a door/boot and then wait. If I then open/close the boot without putting a key in the car remains unlocked.

Can you please repeat your experiment without putting a key in? But making sure the key is away from the car. This will simulate a rf-blocked key in the car.

I would have a word with your dealer and if possible demonstrate the problem. Even if there isn't a fix they should report it to MG who might eventually bring out an update.

@flawia, I carried out your procedure on my 23 reg Trophy and had to wait 30 minutes before the DRLs went out. Then I just opened and closed the boot - nothing happened. I then went indoors and retrieved the key from its Faraday pouch, opened the boot and put the key in and closed the boot. Again the car remained unlocked.

If the problem is consistent then there must be something seriously wrong and a dealer must investigate.

As an aside, please tell what the car's infotainment version is and whether the car has had the software fix to the locked-in recall. This info may not be linked but it is background knowledge.

Repeated experiment. Came back from shopping and left car unlocked. When DRLs switched off placed keyfob in my wife's handbag next to phone (small handbag), opened boot, placed handbag in boot and closed it. No response from car.

@flawia, how long after you closed the boot did the car lock? I will try leaving the key in the boot for a longer time.

Well I left the key in the boot for 5 minutes and the car did lock though I heard a number of relays clicking. So @flawia's car has a problem.

Did you mean "didn't" ?
