MG IM5 - MG's Premium Electric Executive Saloon

Overview and Development

The MG IM5 is a fully electric executive saloon built by IM Motors, a premium EV sub-brand under SAIC Motor. Although it carries MG branding in some markets, it is designed and marketed as part of the IM family (IM stands for Intelligence in Motion). The IM5 pushes MG into the premium EV space with sophisticated styling, advanced features, and competitive pricing.

Design and Market Variants
The IM5 comes in three main trim levels:
  • Standard Range - Rear wheel drive with a 75 kWh battery, about 217 kW (295 PS) and 450 Nm torque. WLTP range is around 304 miles, with 0-62 mph in 6.8 seconds.
  • Long Range - Rear wheel drive with a 100 kWh battery, about 300 kW (408 PS) and 500 Nm torque. WLTP range is about 441 miles, with 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds.
  • Performance - Dual motor all wheel drive with a 100 kWh battery, delivering about 553 kW (742 PS) and 802 Nm torque. 0-62 mph in 3.2 seconds, WLTP range about 357 miles.
All trims use an 800 volt platform and support ultra fast DC charging from 10 to 80 percent in around 17 minutes. Inside, a 26.3 inch panoramic screen stretches across the dash, joined by a 10.5 inch centre display. The cabin uses premium materials and offers strong rear legroom thanks to its hatchback saloon layout with a 457 litre boot.

Launch and UK Market
The IM5 was revealed alongside its SUV sibling, the IM6, at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed. UK pricing begins at about £39,450 for the Standard Range, £44,995 for the Long Range, and £48,495 for the Performance version. These prices put it against cars like the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, and BYD Seal, but the IM5 offers more range or power for the money.

Reviews and Customer Feedback
Reviews have highlighted the IM5's impressive range, very fast charging, and strong equipment levels. While some testers note the steering and ride are not as polished as rivals, the performance, tech and value are praised. Customer feedback points to it being a step up for MG, taking the brand into the premium saloon space with a product that can genuinely compete.

Summary
The MG IM5 shows MG's ambition to move upmarket. It offers different variants to suit different buyers, from long range efficiency to supercar acceleration in the Performance version. With its mix of technology, value, and premium feel, the IM5 is a serious new contender in the executive EV class.

You can order the car on website but can not find any review, this is weird situation.

I'm assuming it is open for pre-orders for the cars. European reviewers haven't been given any yet and they've only seen them in a static display at the Goodwood launch.

There are reviews of the IM L6 in China which is essentially the same car, though there will be local differences for the export versions.

If it's any use to anyone, I've compiled a spreadsheet to list and compare IM5 features across the variants (spoiler alert, there aren't many differences!).
All the data was sourced from MG's website.
Should anyone want one, I can do a similar sheet for the IM6

EDIT - which I now have: here

Seems strange that it doesn't have the traditional MG badge on it instead of the nondescript IM badge.
I'm sure I heard somewhere that IM is a subsidary of MG, who are in turn a subsidary of SAIC?

From Wikipedia:
It (SAIC) also produces and sells passenger vehicles under its own branding, such as Roewe, MG, Maxus/LDV, Rising Auto, and IM Motors.

SAIC seems to have joint ventures with other companies for some of their brands.

I believe that IM is a joint venture, including tech firm Alibaba.

So maybe the software will be even better than the MG branded cars!

From what I've seen of the software in various (overseas) reviews is that it certainly looks up there with Tesla. It's lightning fast compared to the software on my MG4, but then, so was my 286 PC back in the day!!

Looks like Fully Charged have got their review out.

Haven't watched to see if it is just a static review or if there is driving involved.

I've just watched it, and it's simply another walk around and sit-in review. That said, apart from the lack of physical buttons and limited colour choices, I am mightily impressed by the trim level and features for the money.

I've got the nod from the Controller of the Purse, test drive booked, if and when they arrive at the dealers. I just hope the supply goes smoother than the MG4 introduction three years ago!

What a bad tempered review! He obviously went into that "test" with an "I hate Chinese electric cars" attitude from the start! How come he's the only one to find fault with the ride quality? Sensitive backside I wonder? I want a test drive even more now!

"It also seems that not a lot of love has gone into the fine-tuning of the chassis, which is perfectly competent but shows little of the dynamic charm or polish you'd want from a performance saloon with a low centre of gravity. The same applies to rolling refinement, which can be good on certain roads but in the UK there is a consistent pitter-patter underwheel that has an attritional effect on comfort"

Scored 3.5/5

If it turns out that the ride and handling aren't that good on UK roads, then I'll have to rethink my next vehicle choice. I'll reserve judgement until my test drive and then make my own mind up about that.
The only thing that's settled so far for me is the fuel choice! Oh, that and my budget of course!!
