I have had my IM6 for nearly three weeks now and done 1000 miles.
If anyone is interested in my thoughts…
I had a Tesla model 3 for four years, and despite a few niggles, it has been, by a mile, the best car I have ever owned. However, I felt the need to move away from what I view as a tainted brand.
I think the IM6 is lovely car to drive. Smooth, luxurious, well built, comfortable and an all round lovely place to be.
However, there are a considerable amount of irritations, and it feels like it has been rushed to market before being properly snag tested. Here goes….
Very twitchy ADAS - suddenly grabs the wheel for no reason, and then the steering stays stiff for a few moments. Obviously I can switch most of this off but, I shouldn’t really have to.
No station/RDS info on DAB stations.
Radio keeps defaulting back to FM
Radio station favourites screen doesn’t show the whole station name, so I just have a list of buttons on screen that say BBC RADIO - and have to remember which one is which.
No walk away locking.
No sentry mode despite having 10 cameras.
Auto Boot opening very hit and miss.
Pilot mode can be good but can also be a bit un-nerving in how close it gets to the kerb and central lines.
Reverse creep starts slow and then speeds up violently to the point where, if you’re not careful, you will hit an object.
The reversing camera and guides are dreadful - as if they have used a telephoto lens. It makes 5m look like 20m, then suddenly, you’re there !!
The rear camera (in lieu of a proper rear windscreen) is clever, but you can’t alter where it appears on the screen, so for me (and my wife, with a different seat position) it is pretty much completely obscured by the upper left quarter of the steering wheel.
The dashboard visualisation of your surroundings and other traffic has about a half second delay - i.e. at the point when an oncoming car actually passes you, the visualisation still has it on the screen.
In-car (not CarPlay) Spotify doesn’t retain log-in details.
Auto lane change not working at all
Seat massage not working - (well, it does, but switches off after about 2s)
Brakes sticking on after having been parked for a few hours.
Home button on console also resets dashboard screen, so you keep needing to reload your nav / media . back up on screen. Surely SAIC, could just have two on-screen home buttons or have a single and double press option.
Home charging needs constant monitoring as it keeps stopping.
It is very very slow to warm up remotely and the app is very clunky.
App shows different range from the dashboard in the car.
The car doesn’t detect my phone automatically to allow me to get into the car, so always need the key or the card
The key might look cute, but can’t attach to a key ring so you have to buy a sleeve with a strap and key-ring - making it really bulky.
The facility to 2-finger swipe on the console screen to alter the cabin temperature is clever, but only works for the drivers side. So if the passenger side is noticeably different, you have to go into the menu to change it.
Evidently, these are all first world problems, but it’s not a cheap vehicle and given the amount of tech that DOES work on the car, I can’t believe it’s beyond the boffins at SAIC, to flag these issues and sort them out.
Hopefully there will be OTR updates to fix so evidently these, but TBH. I am starting to wish I had put my qualms to one side for the new Tesla Model Y.
