I always lock my car, plug in the charging cable to my wall box and in about 20 seconds it starts charging. Works every time.

That's not true in my experience.
Indeed, I can't think of a time when I've charged and the car hasn't been in ready mode.
A few times it has had to be in Ready mode for you to tap the "start" charging icon on the infotainment screen if the charging session hasn't automatically initiated.
After it's kicked off, then you can lock the car turning it off and wander away...

Car in READY state means you can select Drive. READY state <> sitting on the seat to turn the car On; you have to press the brake pedal to engage READY state.

You can't plug it in when it's locked, the charge port is locked.

If I lock my car before plugging in, the charge port cover won't open.

Typical charging scenario here is wife or I get home in our respective MG4's and park in the driveway.

Car is in Park of course, coz we've parked and put it in said park rather than leaving it in forward or reverse!

Get out and plug in charging cable.

Lock car and go inside.

If it's a "charging time" car will start charging. If it's the high tariff time and the charger is scheduled to "wait" it won't charge immediately and will only commence charging when the charging schedule of the charger enables it

Absolutely nothing to do with "Ready mode". Might be something to do with Ready mode, but the car shouldn't be able to be in Ready mode if you have got out of it (and no longer sitting on the seat) to plug in the charger.

I've never noticed that it actually drops out of Ready when you get out of the car... That being said, it doesn't turn "off" when you get out either.

So, back to trying to help the original poster... You do not need to lock and then unlock the doors to enable charging!

It sounds like the car staying in Ready mode after you've got out of it to charge is a problem though!

I have this nasty feeling that the whole mention of Ready mode is a furphy and nothing to do with it.

I think it might have changed with a software update, because I've just picked Caliban up from his tyre change, and the mechanic described something different from what I remember it doing. On the other hand, it might depend whether you're still in a drive mode or whether you've put the car into neutral first.

Correct - the car stays on (powered up) until you lock it. (It may eventually power itself down without locking but I've never left mine that long).

Also correct that you don't (or shouldn't) need to do a lock/unlock cycle to be able to start charging.

Never had to do that. Reverse into garage, plug in, lock car, walk away. And I don't think the "lock car" part is compulsory, it's just the only way to put out the DRLs.

No Apologies needed, turns out I had it wrong anyway.

Several months ago I was having trouble getting the granny charger to work. I read on here about the lock unlock thing, and since then have always done it and no more problems.

Just now I did a test. Opened charge door, tried to put in ready mode, but it refuses, says charger door open, not doing it.
So I closed charger door and put in ready mode, drove back and forth, got out, opened charge door, plugged in cable and turned on. Charging started almost immediately, but it refuses to go into ready mode.

So no you can't charge in ready mode, because you can't get into ready mode with the charger door open.

However, you'd need a second person, to test if the charger door can be opened while in ready, and then whether the charge would start. I may do that when my wife isn't busy.

I was thinking about this myself

The scenario being it's raining and miserable outside but you need to charge. Have one of the teenagers in the car with you. Hmmm... If I get them to open the charging flap and plug in, I can sit in the nice comfy warm & dry car while they get wet!

I think you're right though... The charging flap probably won't open...

Must try though to see what happens

Anyway that's what should happen if MG have the software correct. You shouldn't be able to drive when it's still plugged in.

Wife sat in car with foot on brake ready light, on but unlocked..
I opened the charger door as normal, didn't drop out of ready, but it came up with, "charger door open". wife selected D, foot off brake and it moved forward. Stopped and back into N, with foot back on brake in ready.
I inserted granny cable and turned on, message came up HVbattery disconnected, after a moment a few clicks and it was charging.
Selected D and it said that car was charging and couldn't be driven.
