I've had this advice confirmed by several different charger makers on their helpline:
- Generally if the charger lets you, authorise the charge before you plug in as it saves having to plug and unplug if it doesn't work for some reason.
- Use the app if it exists to pay for the charge: much less likely to have your payment rejected via Google/Apple pay than if you use a contactless card (due to bank security rules).
- Hold the CCS charger plug firmly in at the top while the car is connecting and negotiating the charge: the communication pins can make poor contact with the weight of the cable and this can make the charge fail, particularly common on MG4s apparently.
- Support the CCS plug and then lock and unlock the car to release the locking pin. Again, on MG4s the locking pin may fail to retract with the weight of the cable hanging on the CCS plug.
