Mg4 fire

Many commiserations, you really have suffered with bad luck with your MG4 , first gearbox failure, now apparently first destructive fire . Hope there is a decent investigation and you can get a proper insurance settlement . Will you go down the MG route with your future choices ? Please keep the forum updated with the eventual outcomes. 😥
I don't rule it out completely, I like the car but I have to say that at the programming level it is very poorly developed.

Were there any aftermarket accessories fitted?
When was it last serviced?
Not so uncommon for cars to catch fire but being the first one reported on this forum afaik it’s worth having mg to investigate.
The car has been serviced in good condition, it must have been another type of fault. I once found a rat nest, but without any rats. Could it be related?

Yep, rats are well known destroyers of anything electric.
I guess to thoroughly check the car for rat damage, you'd need to be able to get into all the small spaces, not easy, but if that was the result, could be worth it.

His car already burned down.. so it is too late. As I recall correctly he had issues in the past with the car, could be related that chewed wiring could have caused the fire. He stated that it may have started near the heating unit.

Hi everyone, I have some bad news. Last Friday night my car caught fire. While driving on the motorway I noticed excessive heat under the air vent at the foot, a few minutes later there was smoke and when I stopped within a few seconds the fire reached the dashboard. I need to know how many reports there are of MG4 fires and causes in England or elsewhere in the world to see if there are any common problems with this type of vehicle.

I saw this on a local news site in France today. I'm not too familiar with the MG range but it looks like it was an MG4 that caught fire on the motorway south of Beauvais on April 29, 2025. The facebook post by the fire service says that they managed to prevent the fire from spreading to the battery compartment. There were no casualties.

Thanks for sharing.

Looks like the rear end was the focus (rear motor? charging electronics? something flammable in the boot?).

As reported, the HV battery did not go up.

Well done to the firefighters there.

That is arson. In the area of the vent, you can see the spiral of the seat belt springs. It is not possible that this piece could have reached there since it is bolted to the structure of the vehicle and is not housed in that part.
