MG4 (2022-2025)
To provide balance to what can often be a negatively skewed platform of internet forums, I will provide a 1 week, 1 month and 1 year ownership update to save boring you all with my delight over the mundane, but sufficient to build confidence to the new owner. I am unashamedly targeting this at others like me who cannot or choose not to buy a new car and where MG4 are looking fantastic value right now as a pre-owned 2-3 year old purchase.

After 1 week:

The good:
  • Quality is very good, equally as good as my previous mondeo top spec, seats are good, everything you touch, solids feeling doors closures etc.
  • Driving is very natural - think of it as a super smooth automatic with bags of torque - in fact its a great steer, better than ford mondeo, mazda 6 and golf I have had.
  • Everything works as it should, zero foibles.
  • Its quiet on the move, even at motorway speed, a very solid drive all round really.
  • Range is as I expected, 200-240 miles on a full charge. But this measure is academic most of the time, It'll do 120 miles from 80% to 20% which is where I keep it.
  • Charging speed. I can rapid charge at about 110-120 kW when the battery is below 70%
  • The app! it works, I schedule all my charges right now with it and I can pre-condition my car etc. There is no functionality that doesnt work for me in the app.

The meh:
  • Infotainment system (whilst a huge upgrade from my Mondeo) is a bit laggy but perfectly usable. I need to remember to "start" the car before plugging in my iPhone otherwise car play doesnt work.
  • Heating controls are a bit awkward, I keep having to adjust the temperature to keep it constant. to be honest i tend just to set it at 16C now and keep my coat on
  • The ACC is a bit crap, heard this complaint from many of other car owners and MG is no different - not smooth. I choose to just drive it myself.
  • Why why why cant I have speed limiter instead of ACC?!
  • LKA is, fine, I keep it on as I cant be bothered to turn it off every time
  • Surprisingly I choose not to use OPD - on my test drive I thought it was great but I just use KERS3 and brake pedal now.
  • 360 camera a bit of a gimmick as the quality is not very useful, I just use my mirrors but maybe I'm still learning.

The bad;
- Nothing for this category right now, literally nothing I can think of as actually bad.

Conclusion: best car I've ever had

Speed limiter? There is an over speed warning that you set yourself. Otherwise that is what setting the ACC speed does. It does tend to slow you down earlier than you probably would when driving without it on but that is what safety systems do. They are much more conservative than most drivers.

There is an option for a speed limiter, in the trophy spec anyway, but you have to select in through the MG Pilot menu every time.

I always preferred using a limiter instead of cruise control in urban environments, but I’ve now gone back to just being more mindful of my speed, as it’s such a hassle to select it. It would be nice if it could be accessible through the steering wheel, but it’s not, and I don’t think it ever will be.

I tried to find it and couldn’t see it in MG Pilot. I just have ACC and TJA options

I can’t find the over speed limiter but if I have to switch it on every time then I’m unlikely to use it tbh. Funnily enough the only time I would like a “bong” is if I go over the speed limit but it’s about the only time the car doesn’t shout at me! I’m too scared to find the switch to turn on more bongs though!
