MG4 X-Power waiting area

At the price-point of the XC30 I’d be going for the Smart#1 Brabus. Much more interesting IMO.
Fully charged show did a good review of the #1 were speaking very well of the cabin quality.
The smart #1 and EX30 are pretty much the same car (motor, platform, battery) all geelly owned.

The one thing I did find surprising was that the reckoned the Brabus didn't have an uprated suspension or brakes over the standard #1. Would be very surprised if that was the case

Was the interior that did it for me - very quirky with the cockpit style wrap around centre console.

The Volvo just has space - find it slightly clinical / dull looking.

Externally the Smart has more about it too.

Well it wont be the EX30 for me. Certainly not worth the money and didnt feel like a so called premium brand, some very cheap looking and feeling plastics. Ok it was a pre production vehicle but still not nice, definitely not worth the extra money on pcp or lease. People can make their minds up themselves, some who were viewing were very enthusiastic, others were like me not impressed.
I felt the MG4 to be a better place to sit, with more internal room, my wife and I thought.

So plan is to arrange another test drive and then make a decision.
Will not be a Smart#1 awful inside and out in my opinion.

That's interesting. What justifies the price then? The badge? Service?

This was one of the strengths of the MG4 when we were benchmarking against the competition.

Good plan, can't have too many test drives.

It looks hideous to me but some love it. I did like the look of the Volvo but I haven't been to a dealer/test driven.

I can't say from what I've seen that I thought the interior of the Volvo looked that special, obviously quality software, screen, stereo, seats etc look good.
The dash material looked like it was trying too hard and the 4 has more space.

Fully charged show raved about the quality of the #1 interior but I'm not a fan of the exterior looks.

X power is probably the best compromise if you won't a car with that straight line speed, fast, stops, not the best quality but best price.

I still think I'd prefer the extended version, best overall package in my opinion

External looks on EX30 are ok, but it was the interior for me that disappointed. Although you can view videos and pictures, its never the same until you can actually see the car. Yes its Swedish design minimalism, but it was a step too far for me.
The actual car cannot be driven and is on static display at selected dealers across the UK. I actually came away feeling dissapointed, as I was looking forward to seeing it.

Anyway onward and upward next test drive booked for tomorrow 👍

Yes but I get why they would. They’re “good enough” most won’t have an issue and when owners DO replace them with something worthy the investment will be worthwhile and extra performance unlocked. I dunno maybe I’m searching for silver linings but it’s the usual thing of budget items being the minimum viable product.

I have an SV650 and it’s a great little bike, also budget but “good enough” for most, when I was enjoying it and trying not to upgrade to a full on sports bike I discovered some decent incremental upgrades I could make that helped bring it into something much more planted and forgiving and refined. Most riders won’t want or need them though so why include them? It becomes another expensive one then not a budget option.

Just my 2c anyhow 🤓

So second test drive taken at a different garage and was encouraged by sales person to give it some welly! So who was I to refuse 😈! This demo was not as unsettled as the other but did hear motor whine more.
To cut a long story short….Im about to order one in white, but just need to choose which lease company to use. Any suggestions from those who have leased? Some good prices out there and reviews, just down to how good the companies actually are. My EV6 is a direct Kia lease through a dealer, so no experience of private lease companies as it was also my first lease.

Did you get to launch it? For both mine I thankfully just got handed the keys but I guess they’d already got a deposit so I guess that allowed me a little more freedom heh.

Yes both from a slow pace but also full launch procedure, it was mad. certainly raised a smile 🤣 I was upfront with the guy and told him I would be leasing, but he encouraged me to safely experience the car.

The salesperson told me that a guy in an Audi TT RS pulled up beside him at traffic lights and asked what it was. He told him and said it would beat him away from the lights. The guy just laughed but he wasnt laughing a minute or so later!

Even my wife was impressed with the performance and liked the car overall, I will have to remember to reign in my inner boy racer 😉

If you are interested in the X Power please get yourself a cup of Tea or Coffee and maybe a nice biscuit..............

WOW!
I ve gone back to the start and re-read the whole 46 pages!!! Many interesting posts and much banter between members!! (Great to see!)
Although new to the forum (first post was yesterday 🤣)

I feel I might be the most experienced with regards to the Xpower having been behind the wheel for just over 300 miles in a little over a week.......

Feel free to check my bio to see how I got here👍

If I am honest (and I am) we only went to test drive an MG4 for a bit of a laugh.
My Audi etron was coming to the end of its 3 year warranty, and with two warranty related issues dealt with in the last 3 months decided to have a change and getting something brand new would be the way to go.

"The" wife is retired and I am very nearly retired so we have become very much more value aware 🤣🤣🤣 hence popping into my local MG Dealer (O C Davies Carmarthen)
Booked in to drive an MG4 at 11am on 29th August and he gave us an hours free reign.
Only the standard car, but we were both very impressed with it. (Surprisingly so if I am honest) ((and you know that I am 🤣))

I was ready to order the Trophy spec LR in Red with 0 percent pcp until he said "We would have to wait 16 weeks......
might be less"
Now, it is one of my biggest failings (of which I have many) but patience has never been one of my strong points.

They had an Xpower (on demo) and yes I had seen it (oh boy had I seen it) on the way in, but I had instantly discounted it.

This was the new me, the sensible me, and I did not want a lairy, shouty, hard riding, baseball cap wearing, land based missile thankyou very much. Until..............

I asked if we could take it out for a drive? Purely to discount it of course, as I am pretty sure that I won't have made it to the first roundabout before bringing it back because it was too stiff or crashy etc.

We were gone another half an hour!

Now, I am not easily seduced by speed and power in a car, since I discovered motor bikes in 2015, but before finding bikes I have been lucky enough to own many fast cars Escort Cossie, M3, Mini GP, M5, couple of RS4's, VXR8, VXR500, E63 AMG, to name but a few, in bikes Yamaha R1 and MT10, Ducatti 1299 Panigale, Aprillia Tuono Factory V4....
My current steed is a Kawasaki Ninja1000SX.

I promise I am not boasting about how lucky I have been, just trying to give some context to how so very fast the Xpower is.
But it's not just fast, the handling is just so well judged for UK roads it blew us away.
That looks weird " blew us away" but we were, just...... blown away!! 🤣🤣🤣

In the real world, where most of us live, where we are not all driving at 10 tenths, and trying to eek out the last 0.2 seconds per lap this car is devastating.
But......... You can also drive it normally.
I saw 4.0 miles per kilowatt on my round trip to Aberystwyth last week and that included several mind bending, incredibly fast, but safe, overtakes.
T.E.T.D. Time Exposed To Danger.
This is the first car that I've ever driven that reduces T.E.T.D like a fast motorbike.

Phew! I was trying to keep it short to stop people switching off but I can't!

Hopefully if your interested in an MG4 X Power then you will still be here...

We went back to the dealer and unbeknownst to me while I was in the loo my wife had pretty much did a deal behind my back, but told Ryan (my dealer) to let me come to a conclusion by myself. (A very clever, if not a bit sneaky cow🤣)

So I asked how many miles had it done?
196.
How long had they had it?
2 weeks.
And I could buy it right here, right now, today?
Yes.
It's a used car now, so can I have a discount?
Of course.
Where do I sign?
My wife burst out laughing! (I now know why!)
I have a Defence Discount Card for ex forces (amongst others) and could have used a company called Motorfinity to get a bit of a discount on a car, but got the car for £34,995 so was over the moon to be honest.
I really did not expect to see a penny off the price of the car, with it being so new to market, so hats off to my dealer for doing me a deal that we were very happy with.
Now......the hum (more like a gentle vibe, like a change of surface if you will) Yes we have it and if all you do is motorway work this might become an issue for you.
I have tuned it out but I only do short trips, 16 mile round trips to St Clears, twice a week, 26 miles roundtrip to Carmarthen, Once a week, 60 mile roundtrip to Crosshands twice a month.
Any other trips out, I always use A and B roads where possible, of which there are many plentiful and excellent roads in my part of the world.
The infotainment speed is no better or worse (in lag) than the Audi and the info provided is all I would ever need in my car.
I do have one recurring issue at the moment which is that the reverse camera picture is intermittently going blue.
I turn off the Lane Keep Assist every time.
I just can't trust it when it is on.
Probably works very well in China where all the roads are well lit and well painted (road markings) and on the whole, straight?

I really miss my electric boot but that's because I have become old and wizened.

Nobody needs this much power in the UK.

Not everyone will want this much power in the UK.

But if you think you do.....it is very nice to have.

P.S. I can drive!

Glad your enjoying you car and good to hear but just for anyone that's still wondering yes or no
Under £35k is what you should be aiming for anyway, deals on autotrader advertising that price, so don't get shafted paying the full price👍

What a great post, long but fun to read and entertaining. Love the picture of your award, made me laugh. I’m going home shortly and will post a picture of my First place Uxbridge Indoor Karting Circuit Trophy in high quality plastic, circa 1995 if I recall. My career didn’t last long, I was black flagged at my next visit for giving a slower kart in front a helpful nudge out of the way. Sulked about that for at least a week, so unfair. 😂
