Anyone else summoned up the courage to replace their speakers? I find the mid bass overwhelming and it spoils an otherwise enjoyable drive.

There was an excellent MG4 video tutorial I watched, but not seen one for an S5. Ordered some speakers and material and will post when I've done mine, but love to learn from someone else if it has already been done.

Hi, I haven't done the door speakers but I've installed an amp where I'm running the factory speakers. I've also pulled up the tweeter grille to have a look. You just need a plastic trim removal tool to wedge them up. Proceed with care.

The infotainment system is pretty much the same as an MG4. I used an Ali Express patch cable. The infotainment system is located behind the glove box. There are 3 to 4 panels that need to be removed. Don't waste time amping the factory speakers. You don't get much of a gain. The speakers are just rubbish.

Please don't attempt this if you don't have experience in pulling cars apart and or understand 12V wiring.

Thanks for the response mate, intention is to use stock head unit and just replace the speakers. Got some slick 6s, will feedback the outcome

So, I've started the tweeter process.
Couple of observations:
1. The tweeters fitted are actually not terrible, better than the hertz uno component set I was going to use to replace them with. They appear to be very small silk domes.
2. Replacing the tweeter and reusing the housing and therefore leaving the cabling intact is possible and relatively trivial.
3. The gap for the grill is very very narrow, so narrow that I had to delaminate a membership card, shimmy that between the gap then prize behind it using a trim tool.
4. When desoldering the tweeter, capacitor side is the positive terminal, there is adhesive in addition to the clips, a hairdryer may help loosen it, but I was just very careful and used leverage.
5. I used some DDT S30 tweeters which fit the hole almost perfectly, but you will need adhesive, I used epoxy as didn't trust hot glue not to melt on a hot day.

As I've done the other side, a few other observations to help.
Start on the curved side of the grill, the 'pointy' end is impossible to get a tool into.
When you reattach the tweeter, make sure you get the alignment of the connector the same as there is a tear drop cut out to allow it to feed through the dash as per picture. I'll upload some videos shortly so you can hear the difference between the two as an a/b. Obviously my phone's mic is a limiting factor as are the listening device, but should illustrate that there is a qualitative difference between the two.

Bit of an update on this, so I looked at the impedance of the tweeter and the capacitor on the stock connector and it's set very high, only about 9khz and above, meaning very little of the sound is output. I've changed the capacitor from the stock 4.7uf to a 10uf version and it makes a dramatic difference. I have no idea what the spec of the stock tweeter is, but I dare say just changing the crossover would be enough for most. I will test a different cap as crossover in the standard tweeter and feedback

Final update on this, I've done an a/b happy to share if will help anyone, but it's the crossover they have fitted that ruins the sound not the tweeter. I don't think a new tweeter is necessary, with the same crossover fitted I'm sure the sound would be similar between the two. Word of warning when changing the cap, the plastic in the housing melts really easily, so the pin will be loose.

I'd be interested in an A/B comparison if you can arrange it.

Surprising how much difference it makes. So are you not going to do the other speakers now?

I will still do the others because that's just the way I am plus already bought them. I'm expecting very little benefit from the rears, whilst the fronts will benefit, I'm looking at creating a low pass filter for the bass speaker and see what difference it makes

I'm reasonably happy with the sound as it is. It's not very "bright" but doesn't fatigue either. The bass could be a bit better though.

That's cool, I found the system very fatiguing and completely unbalanced. The bass is so muddy and overpowering whilst vocals are really dull. One of the reasons I intended to change the bass drivers to see whether they are more 'full range' than what I intend to fit.

I did tweak it a bit with the EQ to make the bass a bit punchier and I think I boosted the vocal range a tiny bit too.

This is amazing timing, I was looking last night for information on upgrading the S5 and there was very little.

I'm planning on fitting a small under-seat subwoofer, and installing some Hertz DSKs. All stuff I have from an old car.

Hopefully it sounds like the factory HU should be enough for those.

I've ordered one of these, so I don't have to splice the factory wiring for high level feeds for the sub.

I'll be keen to see what speaker adapters you use for the doors.

Look forward to hearing how you get on and how to hear someone else is on the journey with me. Didn't fancy DSP etc as trying to keep as stock as possible. I bought a couple of cheap 2 way crossovers which if I'm honest I wish I'd used rather than mess around with caps on the tweeters with hindsight. I was intending to use the mg4 guide and cut out the old woofers and use the rings as spacers.
