New mg4 off to great start

Reduced battery size (relative to the current model) is a retrograde step. Probably won't be coming here though?
Not really, it's an improvement since car will be lighter and will give more range per Kw:

"These provide CLTC-rated driving ranges of 437 km and 530 km, respectively."

CLTC - favouring city driving, where lightness matters, and why the figures are always higher than for WLTP figures, which reflect mixed driving. So, as a city car it would be competing with offerings from Renault, Stellantis etc. in Europe. Given its looks, I wouldn't be betting on its success over here.

The range figures are higher that the existing models and as said before, more kms per Kw, so an improvement in existing the MG4 SE plus better interiors, choice of screen size etc. Can't stop progress.

No doubt the interior and software are greatly improved, and very welcome, but the a couple of fundamentals put me off - the likely reduced range and (for me) much inferior looks. And appearance was one of the main reasons I was nearly an early adopter.

It's going to replace all versions that use the 51kWh battery packs here in Australia, and they're dropping the 777 kWh ER from the range. The Trophy (essence) and Xpower stay and will stay with the current model.

There have been some rumours about the ER being discontinued in the UK (someone mentioned their dealer said it on the forum here somewhere) so it's not that unlikely they'll do to the UK line up what they've announced they'll be doing here.

That's interesting - thanks for the info.

On the one hand it's a pity the ER may be discontinued, but I have to say I prefer the low-Nickel aspect of the NMC batteries in the lesser-range variants anyway.

I don't mind the car or the colour.

Doesn't look as good as the existing MG4 but I think that style is going more towards blobby cars, especially in China.

Maybe China will lead the way, design-wise, now rather than the US.

Renault and Hyundai have been good on design lately, but very influenced by 1980s styles. I'm sure these things go in cycles.

I can well imagine there being a spell in the UK with an 'MG4 Standard' [the new model] and an 'MG4 Sport' [the existing Trophy 64kWh model with the spoiler].

Available in any colour you want, as long as it's mauve!
Hang on a minute, there's a white one hiding at the back. 😊
white.webp

The range has increased.

Do we know that the ER has a different chemistry battery? I thought I read somewhere (but can't find it now) that both the LR and ER both use NMC 523 from CATL?

If they are different, I'm interested why you prefer NMC523 - presumably from a safety / thermal runaway point of view. From an eco & human/child production point of view, the lesser cobalt in the higher nickel chemistries (622 or 811) is presumably a bonus, or have I missed something?

Yes, the safety point of view.

I'm not sure where I might have read it, so the possibility of the ER having achieved the extra range by using a higher nickel formula may well be wrong - it's just that it seemed to be a not too unreasonable conclusion. If it is NCM 5.2.3, then it would be a shame (in my view) to discontinue it.

Folks, this isn't the MG4 replacement in the UK / other markets. China never had a vehicle called MG4 and now they do - but this is a FWD, simplified rear suspension, built-to-a-lowest-cost vehicle. The confusion arises because of the naming.

This is very similar to the ID2.ALL that VW is building - which is not an ID3 replacement.

We may well get this Chinese vehicle but we don't know what it will be called (MG2 is possible). It will provide a lower cost starting point for MG EVs. The MG4 as we know it will still have a future and a new version will come.

Comparing this to our current MG4 doesn't make sense - it is a different vehicle aimed at a different market.
