I've just taken the leap from diesel to EV I've bought ( leasing ) a MG4 trophy battery approx 287 mpc.
I've been offered a service plan for 3 years costing £844 , works out at £283 per year . I'm not sure if that's good , I paid £260 for my Diesel per year and i assume their was far more to do on that compared to a EV.
Also can the speed sign on the dash be trusted? it seams to alter when i go past road signs but yesterday I went past a speed trap according to my dash I was doing 47 in a 60 however the sign was wrong and it was actually a 40 mph zone, so I assume a brown envelope will be arriving shortly. any advice would be most grateful, as I said im new to EV life.

As to the speed recognition you have answered your own question

As to the service and lease plan. Does the car owner in your market not care of the maintenance of his property? What I'm asking is does the owner of the car requires you to do his service?

I would never trust the speed recognition, some of it can be GPS driven from known (out of date) information and sometimes the camera will misread (side street angled signs) or totally ignore them (looking at you tiny 20mph signs). Use it as a guide but always make sure you are aware of the speed limit for the road you are on at any given time. This applies to all manufacturers not just MG.

As for the service if you can negotiate that ALL software updates will be done as part of the package then can be good to lock in prices. Otherwise an EV service plan should always cost less than an ICE car service plan.

I've just arranged my first service for £123, the first and third services are the same, so with your £844 Service Plan, this would make your second service nearly £600, which I think is a bit steep.

I was quoted the below for 3 services and one mot. The price you have been quoted is similar to what I was quoted for 4 services and 2 MOTs.

3 years and one MOT this brings the cost to £547.70

I am paying monthly at £16.77 for 24 months and then £13.50 for year 3. I believe the year 2 service is generally more expensive than 1 & 3.

If you do less than 10k miles a year you can get a low milage plan.

£844 seems a bit steep, my 3 year service plan which I took out in June 2023 was £435 for 3 services and 1 MOT test, nearly half of what you've just paid.

You don't have to take out a service contract with the dealer who supplied your car. Also check out if the service plan includes any extras such as collect and return, courtesy car, free puncture repairs etc.

The speed sign recognition is nice to have but you should not rely on it. It's your responsibility to maintain the car speed within the legal limit. You can switch it off if you find it distracting.

That service package is not good value for money, using MG UK's own figures your first service (1st yr minor service) should be around £114, the second (2nd yr major service) around £220 and the 3rd (3 yr minor service) again about £114. Obviously pricing may change over time.

Speed limit recognition on the MG is particularly poor. I don't know what they're doing, but whatever it is, they're doing it wrong. My Tesla is right 90% of the time, the MG is wrong 90% of the time. It has no concept of the UK's national speed limits. It's ridiculous.

I tend not to rely on the speed recognition system, but in my, somewhat recent, experience it's correct about 80% of the time but has some rather unusual quirks occasionally when it comes to motorway speed recognition.

It’s fairly accurate for me, but does always read the signs on off ramps which is annoying. I never rely on it regardless

It's hopeless around Milton Keynes. It shows all the dual carriageways as 60 where they should be 70 and shows single carriageways as 40 when they should be 60. That's most of the roads around here. It's ok on the 30's but you hardly need it on those roads.

I have to say there is no standard price for MG cars like some other makes, each outlet sets their price. I did a price check between the place I purchased my new car and the place I purchased my last MG car and there was round £85 different between them. Please note you can go to any MG main out let or a service centre which can no longer sell new cars but are still a service centre. You can check out the cost by going to the MG website then search derive plan then there you can pick a out let and check their prices.
