Octopus Intelligent Go says No

I applied to Octopus Intelligent Go and was told they could not yet take on my model, a 2023 MG5 Trophy Estate Long Range. It seems strange that other MG owners are reporting being taken on.

Are the charging configurations for MG models that different?

I am assuming my problem is the model of car and not the charger, a Zappi, as Zappis have a large share of the charger market.

The car also displays SoC in % if I park it at 40% and I want to charge to 80%. I just select 40% in the app and let it dispatch the charging slots.

To confuse matters, octopus renamed their products.

Go became 'flexible go' no longer a 12 month fix (means you're included in the price cap) and the rates are reviewed quarterly.

Intelligent became 'intelligent go' not sure if they changed anything fundamental beyond the name with this one.

Intelligent go is the cheaper of the 2 but access is gated behind compatible chargers or vehicles. Pre-fl MGs will never be compatible due to lacking api hardware, post face-lift models with apps may at some point but it would require MG to provide access to Octopus and currently that doesn't look likely.

Flexible Go although flexible is not included in the price cap. You will note your daytime rate is higher, slightly, than the cap.

But IO can't know what you start with? That's the bit I am confused about. Does it just add in 33% of whatever your maximum capacity is? So if you start with 10KWh, in your example would it add 20KWh, leaving with with 30KWh at the end of the charge? I get my first bill in a few days which will be interesting.

Are you overthinking this a bit.
When you look at your state of charge and think I want to go from 40 to 70% you want to add 30%

If you want to add 33% then the part of your post I have bolded is correct.

i had the same response got the impression it was the Brand but maybe it's the charger i have a podpoint

Might be worth trying again, they let me on board only a couple of weeks ago, maybe it's changed recently

I signed up with Eon-Next, they didn't specify a charger, I got mine off Ali-Express, and wired it up myself, their tariff of 9.5p/kWh from 00:00 till 07:00 works fine for me, the charger stops at 100%, brilliant, their daily rate of 32p/kWh is still better than some or most public chargers.

You need either a compatible vehicle, or a compatible charger. The MG isn't compatible, but Ohme or Zappi chargers are. Those with Mgs that have signed up have integrated to IOG with a compatible charger, which allows them to charge any EV on Intelligent.

With an MG and a Podpoint charger you are not compatible. Neither MG or Podpoint is compatible.

Apply for Octopus Go instead, everything is compatible with that.

Thanks for the replies. It appears that Octopus Intelliegent Go has issues with some makes/models. E.g. The following from November 2023 Kia User Forum.

"Octopus are having lots of trouble with Kias and their API, and subsequently rely on the chargers doing the job. I have an Ohme Home Pro precisely because I know it's compatible and is what Octopus are recommending .... Zappi is also mentioned, but I've seen from some other comments that there have been problems recently with them/IO.

"I think Octopus are probably tearing their hair out in trying to get everything to work and have been for such a long time, I don't know if/when they'll get your Wallbox to work."

Rather than thinking that OI has issues with with some cars, it would be better to think that Octopus works well with some cars but not all.

OI was designed as a tariff for use with cars whose API was accessible in order to control the charging of those cars and supply electrons when they were plentiful and cheap.
So if the API was freely available you could sign up to OI, if not then you couldn't...simple as they say.
Octopus then teamed up with Ohme to create an alternative method for those cars where the API isn't accessible, so that the EVSE could be used to do the charge under IO control. Zappi and now Wallbox have been added to the list of EVSEs that IO can control.

This is not a case of Octopus failing or having problems it is a case of Octopus doing its best to expand the number of vehicles that can access IO despite the lack of co-operation from some vehicles.

I am a week into EV ownership with an ex-demo MG5 Trophy, and I've applied for the full works with Octopus: Zappi, IO tariff, and electroverse. They've not told me I can't join. The electroverse card is in the post (but it would have been anyway I suppose), and I'm in ongoing communication with Octopus about the probable non-standard EVSE installation quote. So, my experience so far tends to back up what a number of people here say, that it's not the car per se. Mind you, I only plumped for the Zappi because of its apparent ease of incorporation into my PV system. If I didn't have solar panels I likely would have gone for another EVSE, and possibly one that won't support the combination of the IO tariff and my vehicle, which is something I was unaware of even a couple of days ago.

So if the general public were to see this conversation it would be another reason why not to buy EVs I'm happy with octopus Go. I guess I'm not intelligent enough for intelligent Go!!
