People thought that about Trump in 2016 and 2024! The electorate are idiots or have vested short-term interests.
Yeah but American politics has been a shambles for years and good old boys will vote for anyone that sorts out the foreigners and lets them shoot folk

Enjoy it while we can. 😁 After the 3p per mile, the next tax will be the weight of an EV, followed by parking charges based on weight and/or size and then the inevitable increase on them all. The government don't see motorists as needing cars because public transport is pants and not fit for purpose unless your in London. Birmingham or Manchester we are just cash cows. The irony of course is they get chauffeur driven ICE cars at our expense to travel a few hundred yards, so will never know the cost of motoring.🚙⛽🚗🚦🚚

Was listening to a discussion on the radio today and they were talking about cost per mile and VED changing to be based on emissions and weight.
Parking is already changing in Cardiff to pay extra for heavy cars, other cities are expected to follow

Coat 🧥 and Shovel on its way, Ian. 🙄😉🙂

And to avoid any misunderstandings I am more than happy to pay my fair share of taxes for the car that I own.
Happy to pay annual VED, happy to pay for anything equivalent to ICE cars.
I am not arguing against this.

What I am bothered about is this ongoing war against EVs by people influenced by the likes of populist parties, influencers and media under the payroll of the oil industry.

People bothered by the fact that mileage drops during winter, conveniently ignoring the drop of mpg too.

People bothered by not achieving the WLTP figures while ignoring that the same applies for MPG.

People pointing to poor residuals which are naturally occurring due to the fast-paced technological advancements of EVs. ICE are the same tech for the last 50 years. Oh apologies they actually got more complicated, so they break down more often and need far more expensive parts and maintenance.

And last but not least complaining about range while 80% of drivers do less than 20 miles per day....
Well said, 👏

Another scare story from the British taxman. They have done this many times and then still upped the price of motoring in a less expensive way. The result? Everyone thinks 'well that's not so bad as it could have been'. Rip-off Britain. Glad I moved away 24 years ago. We have tax free until at least 2032.
Just got back from the 'TUV' inspection (Mot), car is now 3 years old, passed with no problem. Next inspection in 2 years time. Not like in the money grabbing UK where it is every year.
The beauty about the 'MOT' here is that there is a special agency that performs the TUV called DEKRA. They are not garages and do not make repairs so have no temptations to fail cars. The test is also less expensive than for an ICE car so a win win.

This was the situation in Greece where I grew up regarding MOT.
Even now with new cars MOT is after 4 years and you repeat every 2.
Up till early 2000 MOT was performed by state owned testing providers. No initiative for profit making.
Unfortunately during the last 2 decades this changed too and now most providers are private enterprises and no surprise MOT failures are now on the rise....

Hi it's every year for a reason safety, because let's look at how many people buy a car and can't be arsed getting it serviced every year so not getting inspection till MOT and then what happens they mump and moan how much it's going to cost to repair, some people could do 20.000 miles plus in a year with no service because they think they can run and run without maintenance. And to be honest if you get a car that fails it's first mot that tells me it hasn't been maintained, and also you can take your car to a council run MOT station in the UK if you don't want a private garage to do the MOT ?

My own view is that this - if it comes at all - will not be implemented by cameras or tolbooths or black boxes on board cars. All of those kinds of solutions will be enormously expensive and costly and slow to implement.

The government will want something simple and easy to collect - so I think relying on insurance companies who already have to know your annual mileage, will be the way to do it, perhaps backed up by MOT data from year 3 onwards, which might also be used to beef-up insurance checks.

Clocking is already illegal and using the MOT data alone would unfairly target second hand car buyers.

This is simple enough - they wouldn't need to talk to the average car owner at all.

Failing this, they might require MOTs every year from new instead.

Yes, anything like this will incentivise clocking, so they may look at stronger safeguards there such as connected vehicles auto-reporting overall mileage, which could progressively come in as the fleet renews.
