Rain sensor windscreen wipers

I forget to switch the wipers off when I park and if it’s raining when I get back in I always end up with a wet knee from the first swipe. 😂
Or when it snowed the other day, i opened up and sat down the the wipers moved the snow onto myself and the inside on the drivers door.

My experience of auto wipers in chronological order...

1. Peugeot 406 was my first car with them and they were really annoying and didn't wipe when you needed them or wiped at the wrong speed ...<SCRRRRRAPE!> I decided to hate them
2. Audi A4 didn't have them
3. MX5 Roadster I cannot recollect for certain.
4. Skoda Octavia flawless
5. Seat Ibiza flawless
6. MG4 ... oh my lord it's back to the stone age! Do I seriously have to decide on intermittent wiper speed?

My experience is the VWAG has long mastered autowipers but my Peugeot experience wasn't good. It's not the end of the world although I do miss decent autowipers but suspect if the MG4 had them they would be like LKA or ACC in other words another annoying implementation which is worse than not having them at all.

Oof... all my Peugeots that had auto wipers where always a mixed bag. Yeah sort of convenient but mostly they were always a little too late, or suddenly at the lights they'd go full speed and I felt like anybody watching must think "calm you farm, it's just a drizzle". I was surprised a car in 2024 comes without, but I don't mind not having it tbh

ZS EV gen 1 handbook,

There does seem to be a rain sensor, and it does work.

Mind, the wipers are a bit of a law unto themselves...

Really? Do you really find it that much of an inconvenience? 🤔 It's not that hard to switch your wipers on, is it? 🙂
Switching them on at the start of the drive isn't the problem as I expect you realised but sometimes there isn't an appropriate speed for the rainfall rate so I have to turn them on and off every few seconds to clear the screen without scraping as there isn't an approriate rate setting. I had two days last week where I was constantly having to switch them on and off as I cannot stand the scraping noise and I don't like driving with a rain misted screen. The MG4 is as annoying as the Renault I had in 2000 was with its automatic implementation that didn't judge the speed appropriately. If I still lived in London I wouldn't mind but I get a lot more smir up here.

Isn’t a push down on the stalk a single wipe? It’s not much better than turning it on and off, but I use that when the lowest intermittent speed is still too high. I also hate wipers running across a dry windscreen but don’t mind a slight mist on the screen.

I might be misled by my Peugeot muscle memory with the single wipe thing, but someone will be around to correct me if I’m wrong.

From memory I think there's a push for spray/wipe (which I use more than I should as I like a really clear screen) but I am away skiing at the moment so I cannot go check if there is a single wipe. Anyway, it's not as good as I'd like but the car overall is very pleasing and a bargain in my opinion.

Yeah I couldn’t be bothered going to check the car because it’s still 32°C outside and I’m trying to go to sleep. Snow sounds lovely, I might see if I can dream about that haha

Enjoy your skiing!

Sleep well. I always love skiing! Just a half day today as it's a white out with high winds however tomorrow will be better.

Pull for "spray/wipe" and press down for "single wipe" on mine.

So even though the manual says automatic, they are not full automatic (rain sensing)

I guess they mean the car wipes intermittently "automatically" but I agree that is a pretty misleading use of words. It's like saying the wipers "automatically" go fast when set to Fast Speed Wipe.

As far as I know the MG4 does not come with a sensor that wipes the windscreen when it detects a certain amount of rain/water droplets.

My 2 previous cars:
Renault Clio 2007 - had auto wipe but it was inconsistent requiring regular intervention so generally annoying.
Audi A3 2018 - had auto wipe that worked perfectly.

I don’t really miss it on the MG4, it is only worth having if it works perfectly and definitely not if it doesn’t IMHO.

My previous Hyundai Ioniq's auto wipers were so annoying, and made driving in the rain a chore. I am so glad the MG4 doesn't have the functionality as I'd have no confidence MG could manage to do this right, based on the rest of the effort put in to software & hardware combo's.

I've had BMW's, VW's and Skoda's where auto wipers work really well so it does seem some manufacturers care about doing these things right, where others just wing it. Maybe we have the "wrong type of rain" here.
