sensor

A sensor is a device that produces an output signal for the purpose of sensing a physical phenomenon.
In the broadest definition, a sensor is a device, module, machine, or subsystem that detects events or changes in its environment and sends the information to other electronics, frequently a computer processor. Sensors are always used with other electronics.
Sensors are used in everyday objects such as touch-sensitive elevator buttons (tactile sensor) and lamps which dim or brighten by touching the base, and in innumerable applications of which most people are never aware. With advances in micromachinery and easy-to-use microcontroller platforms, the uses of sensors have expanded beyond the traditional fields of temperature, pressure and flow measurement, for example into MARG sensors.
Analog sensors such as potentiometers and force-sensing resistors are still widely used. Their applications include manufacturing and machinery, airplanes and aerospace, cars, medicine, robotics and many other aspects of our day-to-day life. There is a wide range of other sensors that measure chemical and physical properties of materials, including optical sensors for refractive index measurement, vibrational sensors for fluid viscosity measurement, and electro-chemical sensors for monitoring pH of fluids.
A sensor's sensitivity indicates how much its output changes when the input quantity it measures changes. For instance, if the mercury in a thermometer moves 1 cm when the temperature changes by 1 °C, its sensitivity is 1 cm/°C (it is basically the slope dy/dx assuming a linear characteristic). Some sensors can also affect what they measure; for instance, a room temperature thermometer inserted into a hot cup of liquid cools the liquid while the liquid heats the thermometer. Sensors are usually designed to have a small effect on what is measured; making the sensor smaller often improves this and may introduce other advantages.Technological progress allows more and more sensors to be manufactured on a microscopic scale as microsensors using MEMS technology. In most cases, a microsensor reaches a significantly faster measurement time and higher sensitivity compared with macroscopic approaches. Due to the increasing demand for rapid, affordable and reliable information in today's world, disposable sensors—low-cost and easy‐to‐use devices for short‐term monitoring or single‐shot measurements—have recently gained growing importance. Using this class of sensors, critical analytical information can be obtained by anyone, anywhere and at any time, without the need for recalibration and worrying about contamination.

    Parking sensor woes

I have been having a problem whereby when I start the car and begin to manoevre it announces that there is "AVM System Failure" and I also receive a message on the app that says "The Park Distance Control Status of your vehicle is abnormal". What all this means in plain English is that the car...

    Cost for rear sensor replacement?

Hi all. I've been driving a new MG4 since October. Just before christmas I started with an intermittent fault on rear parking sensor. I've contacted my dealer and they want £140 plus vat to assess if its even covered by the warranty. Seems a bit of a con since the sensors on my previous cars...

    TPMS sensor replacement cost

How much should it cost to replace a damaged TPMS sensor on an MG5EV? My local dealership are quoting £150 for an hour's labour, plus the cost of the sensor itself. Does that seem correct? The valve itself is damaged, not the actual sensor, so it's currently holding air but cannot be filled...

    What is this???

So, I have washed my car, by hand, quite a few times since I got it (Sept 23) and I can't say I have ever noticed this......... I only noticed it today when checking for stone chips. As I looked round it, the active flaps were only just closing and I saw the gap. On closer inspection I think...

    Oxygen sensor

Hi All, I've had my PHEV since Feb 2022 and lately ( 3 times in last 4 months) I have had an engine fault display on the dash. The previous 2 times the dealer has said it is the oxygen sensor. The second time they swapped the sensors around to see what would happen. The same warning has just...

    Rear sensor blocked

Hi all Picked up the new mg hs yesterday. Today driving down a country road, I had a message come up ‘rear driving assist sensor blocked’ I’ve got home and checked, the car isn’t particularly dirty and I can’t see the sensor could be blocked. Is this likely to be a sensor fault?

    Tyre pressure sensor

Advice appreciated. All four tyres showed up as 'low tyre pressure' during a cold snap we had a couple of weeks ago (-4 or so). I didn't really need to use the car during this period so left it until we got back to 0 to 5 degrees (or thereabout) and then pumped them back up to the recommended...

    No Charge flap open detection?

Very nearly drove off with the Charge Flap open yesterday, it was only because a neighbour said something as I was pulling out that I noticed. Kind of surprised the car didn't warn that this was the case, is there no sensor on the locking mechanism? This is the pre-facelift 5

3d printed auto light sensor cover

Hi are there any users on here that I could purchase one of the sensor covers from that have printed their own or does anyone know where I could purchase one from. I can't modify my own as it's a salary sacrifice car so it'll need to go back in tact when I return it!

Keyfob only recognized if placed over sensor

It’s not the batteries in the keyfob. It’s been diagnosed as the sensor within the MG. Is there a device which I could place over the sensor directly that would then communicate with my keyfob. It’s becoming very painful to lock the car using the physical key.
