After 2.5 years, I found a fix for this issue.
Update Waze to the latest software.
Then open Waze settings -> Map View -> Dark mode -> and select "Only at Night."
Also, turn on the "Apply on car screen" setting.
Now I have to get used to not toggling the lights off and on every time.
Thanks to Waze developers for a good solution even though it's mainly a problem of the MG's poor software.
