VOTE TESLA SUPERCHARGES with MG5

Hi again, and thank you for that information Jackios, re the MG4. as you may know my wife has one, it was one of the very first registered in the UK, and you're right about the dash, but you do get used to it. I drive it quite often and it’s a little go cart, but it is annoying at times trying to change anything. Regen is set at 3 as standard and normal mode is fast enough for me would I have one for myself. Well I could live with one but much prefer the ride of the 5.

And the PFL which I had first over the FL trophy I have now, the bigger wheels are to blame for that and a little less (20 miles) range to boot. but still a great car. But not worth the extra cost,

Les

I, finally, have the EVCC info from my PFL 5LR, which show it to be 11268368. This, from my understanding, can't be software updated, and would need a new EVCC.

The quoted cost of £680, which wouldn't be recouped over the life of the car, finished any interest I had in using Tesla charging.

It's a shame, but hey,ho I've managed for 3 years without it.

I have an EVCC-02 with the part number 11313393 which some have had updated to support Tesla chargers, but I'm still trying to find an MG garage that has done it. My local Chiswick MG said it'll cost £360 & a new part despite me telling them it can be done. MG themselves said try a larger dealer so I called Mill Hill MG, they were willing to have a look, but they didn't know anything about it, so I think it best if I can a garage that has actually done the update. If anyone knows an MG garage near London has done this EVCC number before please let me know.

Pop out to Bulldog Twyford, they did mine & have no issues doing it.

No. I have been told (29/1/25):-
"We have been asked to do the tesla update
Due to the evcc on the car we can not do this
Only way we can is replace this part to make it applicable as per attached document
Part and labour £385.07
Also this is not a warranty issue"
'not a warranty issue' does that mean it would or wouldnt invalidate oe warranty?

No, it just means that although it is obviously a bug they consider that fixing it is an enhancement and so the dealer isn't allowed to claim back their time from MG under the warrantee.

Warranty terms is irrelevant here, sorry! If you are able to have the update done it in no way affects your warranty!

As @kevin ellard said, the "Tesla Update", if it can be applied to your car (if it is not a PFL SR) is a software update.

I had it successfully applied to my MGS PFL LR by my then dealer who has since, regrettably. closed down. In my case, because I had bought a number of cars from this dealer over the years it was done free of charge, though I know others have reported that they were charged for what, in my case, seems to have taken about 20 minutes!

I'm not sure I agree the lack of this Update is a bug. I think it was agreed some years ago that this "difficulty" was caused by Tesla making a change to its charging protocol, a change which could not be applied to the earliest MG5s, especially the SR models, because that car's EVCC was simply not compatible. Hence, the requirement to change that unit.

The later-released LR models clearly benefit from the updated EVCC.

I read in an mgevs forum thread a quote from a dealer saying it would invalidate warranty as it would be treated as an 'upgrade' - clearly both this and when the PF LR started accepting s/w updates needs nailing somehow
see below a 2022 PF charging just fine, presumably with no update....

Although that is definitely true, my understanding is that early MG5s with the bug were occasionally locking up Tesla chargers and putting them out of action. Tesla then put in a check for the specific issue and prevented cars that displayed that problem from connecting.
Either way it was very shortsighted of MG not to fix the cars under warrantee. I cant imagine that anyone who got conned out of £180 for a software update will be buying another MG.
