Washing the MG4 - useful tip - place the wipers in the service position - here's how

Cleaned the wiper blades the other day, remembered to use service mode but not that the car turns on and puts the wipers away when you sit in the front seat, fudge.

Gave my wife’s MG4 it’s first clean yesterday I must say it is not the easiest car I have ever washed.
There are lots of nooks and crannies to get your sponge into, and the black at the bottom of the doors
on the sills and the sills inside the the door frame apertures, where pretty dirty plus the front and rear black trims also, but I have done others almost as bad over the years black is not the easiest colour to keep clean in my opinion

So now for the word of warning, some of you that have been reading this forum for some while will remember that when the MG5 came, back in 2020, that a few people damaged the paint work on the rear edge of the bonnet, this happen by trying to lift the wiper blades off the screen while washing their cars, without first putting the wipers into the service position.

Well the MG4 is the same you need to place the wipers in the service position if you want to lift them off the screen to clean it, the wiper blades or the wiper arms.

I know a lot of you will know this, especially if you have had the MG5 for a while but, there will be new owners out there both new to the MG4 and to MG5 cars also, who may not so that is why I have done this posting.

In the hand book page 301 it attempts to tell what to do but just in case your unsure here is what you need to do
Sit in the car touch the brake pedal to wake the car up and the home screen will light up.
View attachment 12238
So now you press the Car icon bottom right see my pointer

View attachment 12239

Press that and the drive mode screen will come up.
View attachment 12240
At the top you will see the Saftey icon on the right hand side. See my pointer again.

View attachment 12241
Press the saftey icon and then the saftey screen comes on
View attachment 12242
So on the saftey screen press the power off button

View attachment 12243
And then push the wiper control stalk down once within a few seconds and the Wipers will come up to the drivers side and stop there vertical on the screen, and then in that position you can lift the wipers off the screen for cleaning or changing if you need too.

Now just one other warning be sure to lay the wipers back down on the screen before you get back into the car reason being when you get in if you just touch the brake pedal the car will wake up and the wipers will go down again to there rest position and very probably damage the paint on the bonnet and probably the wiper arms as well so wipers flat on the screen befor you do a thing else.
You have been warned.

But I Hope this might be of some help to some of you.

Thanks Les, great tip

Definitely a must this. Mine went back to have a bonnet respray. The service valletors obviously don’t know about service mode and the scratches the bonnet raising the wipers. They paid for a respray on that.

So I always make a point to mention and go into service mode if anyone else is working on the vehicle.

As we know turning off the MG4 to put the wipers in service mode is normaly done through the infotainment screen and the safety tab, battery management and confirm etc.

Since I use the wiper service mode many times a day now in the winter (wet snow/ice here in Norway now you know) I use an another and much faster way to do this.

Park the car as normal and get out of it, then with the driver's door still open press the lock button on the car's remote control (the car will beep once since the door is open).

Within 20 seconds stretch through the steering wheel and press the wiper switch down and the wipers move to the service position (avoid to activate the seat bum sensor after getting out of the car). Then close the door and lock the car with the door switch or the remote control.

The car can be opened and closed after this as normal without the wipers going down to the normal park position before one is activating the wiper switch or sitting down in the driver's seat.

When you have the wipers parked in the service position, you must always remember to check that the wiper blades are not frozen to the windscreen before you sit down in the driver's seat or activate the wiper switch.

Clearing frozen windscreen wipers before getting into the car is obviously a must on the MG4 and any car with the wipers parked in the service position.

Hope this is useful.

I'm taking my car in for an inside/outside valet tomorrow and this is what worries me.

I note that I need to put the wipers in the service position (Thanks for the clear instructions Les), but I'm concerned if someone sits on the drivers seat to do the interior it's going to set the wipers off...

Yes it certainly will and it the wipers are off the screen at the time they might damage the edge of the bonnet.
So if you don’t need to do not put them that in the service position that would be fine but point out they must not lift the wipers off the screen while they are in the park position hopes this helps

That seems like the sensible way to go about it, I'll just have to warn them. Thanks Les!

This was very helpful yesterday. I know an old post but I knew I had read somewhere you could turn the car of via the info screen but for the life of me could not find it. I would never have thought to look under safety tab lol

Brilliant, thanks for the tip. Only had my MG4 Trophy for 3 weeks and the dealer didn't know this way to lift the wipers.

View attachment 12238
Agora, pressione o ícone do carro no canto inferior direito e veja meu ponteiro.

View attachment 12239
